F2P 2026 mid-year review — what's actually popular vs. what the press hypes

Halfway through 2026, the F2P landscape has shifted significantly from where it started the year. We crunched the data on what F2P players are actually playing (not just what press headlines cover) to see what's really popular in 2026.

The data sources

We pulled data from:

  • Steam Charts — concurrent player counts
  • Twitch viewer counts — last 6 months
  • Google Trends — search interest for game

names

  • Reddit subscriber counts — community size
  • Mobile analytics (Sensor Tower estimates)
  • OFFLANE's own analytics — traffic to game

pages on offlane.xyz

The top 10 F2P games by actual popularity

1. Fortnite — still #1

  • Steam CCU: 1M+ (when no live event)
  • Twitch hours watched: 250M+ (last 6 months)
  • Why #1: The Chapter 7 era has been a

renaissance. The Simpsons crossover, the live events, and the constant content drops keep the game in the cultural conversation.

2. Counter-Strike 2

  • Steam CCU: 1.4M+ (consistent)
  • Twitch hours watched: 400M+ (last 6 months)
  • Why #2: The Cache return, the Shanghai

Major, and the consistent Major-level events keep CS2 in the top 2.

3. Genshin Impact

  • Steam CCU: 50K-100K (PC only)
  • Mobile DAU: 15M+
  • Why #3: 5.0 Natlan in March was a major

content drop. The new region and the Pyro Traveler's rework brought back lapsed players.

4. Marvel Rivals

  • Steam CCU: 80K-150K
  • Player sentiment: Recovering after a

slow Q1

  • Why #4: Season 3.5 with Blade in August

brought back lapsed players. The team-up rework addressed long-standing complaints.

5. League of Legends

  • Steam CCU: N/A (launcher)
  • Player count: 150M+ monthly
  • Why #5: Worlds 2026 prep and the Season 3

launch with Doom Bots + Xin Zhao kept engagement high.

6. Once Human

  • Steam CCU: 30K-80K (variable)
  • Player sentiment: Very high (4.5/5 on

Steam)

  • Why #6: The biggest surprise of 2026. The

Deviation system and the 1-year anniversary event built genuine community goodwill.

7. Apex Legends

  • Steam CCU: 100K-200K
  • Player sentiment: Recovering after a

long decline

  • Why #7: Season 30 with Sparrow and the

Olympus rework brought back lapsed players.

8. Valorant

  • Steam CCU: 80K-150K
  • Twitch hours watched: 200M+ (last 6

months)

  • Why #8: Consistent ranked play, Champions

Tour 2026, and the new agent releases keep the player base engaged.

9. Honkai: Star Rail

  • Steam CCU: 30K-80K
  • Mobile DAU: 10M+
  • Why #9: The 3.5 Amphoreus expansion with

Remembrance path brought new content freshness.

10. Deadlock

  • Steam CCU: 10K-20K
  • Player sentiment: Mixed but improving
  • Why #10: The August 18 update with 6

new heroes and the Hideout social hub is the biggest content drop yet.

The biggest surprises of 2026 so far

1. Once Human overtook Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 was the surprise hit of Q1 2024. Once Human has been the surprise hit of Q1-Q2

  1. Both are survival-craft games that benefited

from word-of-mouth + friend-group adoption.

Why Once Human won:

  • Console launch planned (Helldivers 2 was

PS5/PC at launch)

  • F2P model (Helldivers 2 is $40)
  • Deviation system is genuinely original
  • Cross-progression between PC and console
  • Better PvE content (Helldivers 2 is

squad-focused, Once Human is solo-friendly)

2. Marvel Rivals recovered

Marvel Rivals had a slow Q1 (post-launch decline, like every hero shooter). The Season 3.5 update in August brought back lapsed players with Blade and a major team-up rework.

Why the recovery worked:

  • Blade is a popular character — the

community had been asking for him since launch

  • Team-up rework addressed real complaints

— Luna Snow's identity, Mantis's team-up redundancy

  • Ranked MMR changes (team-size limits by

rank) gave competitive players clearer progression

3. The 4X F2P scene grew

Civilization VI free weekends, Stellaris free weekends, and Unciv (open-source) have grown the F2P 4X audience significantly in

  1. The 4X genre is no longer paywalled for

casual players.

The biggest disappointments of 2026 so far

1. Helldivers 2's player decline

From 450K concurrent in February 2024 to 20-30K in mid-2026. The game is still good, but the live-service content drops haven't kept up.

2. Overwatch 2 Season 18 delay

Season 18 was supposed to ship in early August. It's been delayed to late August. Players are losing patience.

3. Apex Legends' long tail

Apex had 200K+ CCU in 2022. Today it's consistently 100-200K. The decline is real but not catastrophic.

1. Survival-craft consolidation

Once Human + Palworld + Unturned + Rust + DayZ = the survival-craft market is mature. Expect more consolidation and less new entrants.

2. Hero shooter cooling

After the Marvel Rivals launch in 2024, the hero shooter market cooled. Marvel Rivals recovered with 3.5, but the genre is no longer growing as fast as it was in 2024.

3. ARPG renaissance

Path of Exile 2, Last Epoch, and the upcoming Diablo IV expansion are bringing ARPG players back. The genre is healthier than it's been since 2018.

4. Gacha stabilization

Genshin, HSR, Wuthering Waves, and ZZZ have found a stable equilibrium. The whale-dominated model is unchanged, but F2P players are getting more content per patch.
