TI 2026 dark horses — the 4 teams that could shock Shanghai

The TI 2026 favorites are clear: TEAM VISION (PARIVISION) (EWC 2026 champion, +300), Team Falcons (TI 2024 + TI 2025 winners, +350), and Team Spirit (TI 2021 + TI 2023 winners, +500). The betting markets give those three a combined 60% chance of winning the tournament.

But favorites lose. At every TI, there's at least one team that exceeds expectations by 2-3 rounds — making a top-4 finish when the betting markets had them at top-8. Here are the 4 dark horse teams that could make a deep run at TI 2026.

Nigma Galaxy — the redemption arc

Why they could win: Nigma is the highest-ceiling non-favorite team in the tournament. The 2017 + 2018 TI champions' core (KuroKy, GH) is playing in their 11th TI, and SumaiL (TI 2015 finalist, TI 2019 finalist) is back in the org after a 2-year absence. The team's 7.41d draft discipline is the best of any non-favorite, and GH's Earthshaker is the highest-skill support play in the EU region.

Why they might not: Nigma's mid (lorenof) is a relative unknown at the international level. The 2-1 loss to Iron Wing in Round 1 exposed the team's mid-lane vulnerability. If Nigma gets a 1-1 bracket with a top mid (Yatoro, No[o]one, Nightfall), they can lose the upper-bracket race fast.

X-factor: KuroKy's draft. Nigma wins when KuroKy gets to play his comfort heroes (Earthshaker, Chen, IO) and loses when the opponent forces him off. The team's flexibility is the best of any non-EU team.

Aurora Gaming — the CIS dark horse

Why they could win: Aurora is the strongest CIS team outside Team Spirit. Nightfall's mid-lane is the best CIS mid in the tournament, and the team's draft is built around his Puck/Ember Spirit comfort picks. Aurora's 2-0 over GamerLegion on Day 1 showed the team's laning phase is the best of any non-favorite.

Why they might not: Aurora's 0-2 loss to Team Spirit on Day 2 exposed the team's vulnerability to high-tempo mids (Collapse's Primal Beast was the difference). If Aurora faces Yatoro or No[o]one in the upper bracket, they need Nightfall to be the best mid in the series.

X-factor: Nightfall on Puck. The team's draft is built around his Puck + Ember Spirit comfort picks. Aurora wins when Nightfall dominates mid.

Iron Wing — the ex-Tundra Cinderella

Why they could win: Iron Wing is the ex-Tundra Esports roster (Pure, bzm, 33, Ari, Whitemon) playing under the broadcast tag at TI 2026 because of Valve's gambling ban. 33 (Neta Shapira) is going for his third Aegis of Champions (TI 2022 with Tundra, TI 2024 with Team Liquid). The team's 2-0 over HULIGANI on Day 1 was the cleanest sweep of the day.

Why they might not: Iron Wing's 1-2 loss to BoomBoys on Day 2 was a competitive series, but the team's 1-2 score on the 1-1 bracket means they need to win out from there. If Iron Wing faces a 3-0 team in Round 4, they need 33 to be the best mid in the series.

X-factor: 33's hero pool. The two-time TI champion is the most versatile mid in the tournament. The team's draft is built around his Primal Beast, Mars, Ember Spirit, Puck, and Outworld Destroyer pool.

BoomBoys — the rebranded CIS core

Why they could win: BoomBoys is the BetBoom Team core (Kiritych~, gpk~, MieRo, Save-, Kataomi) playing under the broadcast tag. gpk~'s mid is the best CIS mid outside of Nightfall, and Kiritych~'s carry is the second-best on a 1-0 team after Day 1. The team's 2-0 over OG and 2-1 over Iron Wing were both strong performances.

Why they might not: BoomBoys is in the same 1-0 bracket as TEAM VISION. The Round 3 matchup (TEAM VISION 2-0 BoomBoys) showed the team's vulnerability to VISION's drafting. If BoomBoys faces VISION again in the playoffs, they need gpk~ to outplay No[o]one.

X-factor: gpk~'s tempo. The team's draft is built around his Puck, Ember Spirit, and Outworld Destroyer comfort picks. BoomBoys wins when gpk~ dominates the mid-lane tempo.

How to watch for non-bettors

If you're not betting, these dark horses are still worth watching for the storylines:

  • Nigma's KuroKy + GH in their 11th TI

is the most-decorated duo in the field. Watch for their late-game decision-making.

  • Aurora's Nightfall on Puck is the

highest-skill mid-lane play in the CIS region. Watch for his laning-phase highlights.

  • Iron Wing's 33 going for his third

Aegis is a generational storyline. Watch his hero pool.

  • BoomBoys' gpk~ is the most-improved

mid of 2026. Watch for his tempo picks.

What to expect

Of these 4 dark horses, Iron Wing has the best chance of making top-3 (33's hero pool is top-tier and the team has beaten Nigma Galaxy and Team Falcons already). Nigma has the best chance of an individual series upset (the KuroKy + GH duo can win any Bo3 if the draft goes their way). Aurora and BoomBoys are longshots but have the meta read to make a top-6 finish.

My predictions:

  • Iron Wing: Top-3 finish (40%

confidence)

  • Nigma Galaxy: Top-4 finish (35%

confidence)

  • Aurora Gaming: Top-6 finish (30%

confidence)

  • BoomBoys: Top-8 finish (35%

confidence)

The bold prediction

Iron Wing wins the whole thing (+1000 odds). They have the ex-Tundra roster, 33 going for his third Aegis, and a meta read that suits their playstyle. If they avoid TEAM VISION in the upper bracket of the playoffs, they can ride 33's hero pool to the grand final. The market is underrating Iron Wing because of the broadcast tag — this is a TI 2022 + TI 2024 championship roster under a new name.
