Best FPS settings for a low-end PC in 2026 — get 60+ FPS without buying a GPU

Three free settings changes that double your FPS in CS2, Valorant, Apex Legends, and Overwatch 2. No GPU upgrade, no money spent, just the right menu options turned off.

You don't need a new GPU

The current GPU market is rough. A 2026 mid-range card (RTX 5060, RX 7600) still runs $400-500, and high-end options are north of $1,000. If you're stuck on older hardware — GTX 1060, RX 580, integrated graphics — the answer isn't "buy a GPU." The answer is turn off the right settings.

These three changes double FPS in competitive shooters, cost nothing, and have minimal impact on visual quality. They work across CS2, Valorant, Apex Legends, Overwatch 2, and pretty much every Unreal Engine 4/5 shooter on PC.

1. Cap your framerate to your refresh rate

Most players skip this one, and it's leaving 20-30% performance on the table.

If your monitor is 60Hz, your GPU is drawing 200+ frames per second, doing 3x the work it needs to. That's heat, that's power, and in some games, that's input lag (yes, really — uncapped FPS can feel worse than capped because of frame pacing).

The fix:

  1. Open your game's settings, find "Frame Limiter" or "Max FPS"
  2. Set it to your monitor's refresh rate (60 for 60Hz, 144 for 144Hz, etc.)
  3. If the in-game limiter doesn't work, use RTSS (RivaTuner Statistics Server) — it's free, works in every game, and gives you a precise frame cap

In CS2, going from uncapped to 60 FPS cap on a GTX 1650 jumps you from ~45 FPS to a locked 60. The 1% lows (those microstutters) also clean up.

2. Drop shadows to Low or Off

Shadows are the single most expensive setting in any modern game. They're rendered for every light source, every frame, for every object in the scene. They have minimal gameplay impact in competitive FPS — if a player is behind a wall, you can't see their shadow anyway.

The fix:

  1. Open video settings
  2. Set "Shadows" to Low or Off
  3. (Optional) Set "Shadow Quality" separately if the game has it — sometimes you can keep low-quality shadows on without much cost

In Apex Legends, dropping shadows from High to Off gains ~15% FPS on a GTX 1060. Visual difference: barely noticeable in motion.

3. Disable ambient occlusion and post-processing

Ambient occlusion (HBAO+, SSAO, etc.) adds shading where objects meet — looks nice in screenshots, doesn't help gameplay. Post-processing (depth of field, motion blur, lens flare) is the same story.

The fix:

  1. Disable Ambient Occlusion entirely
  2. Disable Motion Blur (also helps with motion sickness and visual clarity)
  3. Set Post-Processing to Low
  4. Disable any "cinematic" effects (chromatic aberration, film grain, vignette)

These three together usually net you 10-15% FPS. Combined with the shadow and FPS cap changes, you're looking at 40-50% performance gain over a default "High" preset.

What to leave on (the exceptions)

Not every setting is wasted GPU time. These are worth keeping because they have actual gameplay value:

  • Texture quality — affects loading times more than FPS. If you have enough VRAM (4GB+), keep textures on High.
  • Anti-Aliasing (TAA or FXAA) — TAA costs some FPS but cleans up the shimmering that makes low-res rendering look bad. FXAA is essentially free.
  • Model/texture detail — affects how detailed character models look at distance. Leave on High; the cost is minimal.
  • Anisotropic filtering — fixes texture aliasing at angles. Usually 8x or 16x is free.

The general rule: if a setting affects how you see other players, keep it on. If it affects how the world looks, turn it off.

The one setting everyone forgets: V-Sync

V-Sync adds input lag. In single-player games, this doesn't matter. In competitive shooters, it absolutely does.

The fix:

  1. Turn V-Sync OFF in-game
  2. If you have screen tearing, use a frame cap (from step 1) instead
  3. If you have G-Sync or FreeSync, leave V-Sync on in the driver panel but off in-game

G-Sync + V-Sync off in-game + frame cap = smooth visuals without input lag.

Per-game quick presets

CS2 (Source 2)

shadows: Very Low
effects: Low
multicore rendering: Enabled
boost player contrast: Enabled (actually helps visibility)

The "boost player contrast" toggle adds a thin outline to enemies. Cheating? No — it's an official Valve setting used in pro play.

Valorant

Valorant is already well-optimized for low-end PCs. If you're struggling:

material/texture quality: Low
anti-aliasing: MSAA 2x (don't use higher — diminishing returns)

That's it. The rest of the game's settings are fine on Low.

Apex Legends

anti-aliasing: TSAA
texture streaming budget: High (if you have VRAM) or Medium
ambient occlusion: Disabled

Overwatch 2

render scale: 75% (the biggest knob)
dynamic reflections: Off
shadow detail: Low

Render scale below 100% is the cheat code for Overwatch 2. It renders the game at a lower resolution and upscales, which gains huge FPS for minimal visual loss.

When to actually upgrade

If you've made all these changes and you're still under 60 FPS in your main game, it's time to look at hardware. But before buying a GPU:

  • Check your RAM — 16GB is the minimum for modern games. If you're on 8GB, upgrading to 16GB ($30-40) often gives 20-30% more FPS.
  • Check your CPU — if you're on a 4-core/4-thread CPU from 2015 or earlier, that bottleneck won't go away with GPU settings. A used Ryzen 5 3600 ($60-80) is a massive upgrade.
  • Check your storage — if your game is on a spinning HDD, moving it to an SSD cuts loading times in half and reduces texture pop-in.

The right GPU upgrade for a GTX 1060 / RX 580 era PC is a used RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT ($200-250 in 2026). That's a real 2-3x performance jump over the old card, and it runs every F2P competitive shooter at high refresh rates.
