Call of Duty: Warzone beginner's guide: from zero to first win

Quickstart

Warzone has been the most-played battle royale since 2020 and the 2026 version (post-Verdansk return) is the most accessible it's ever been. New players make the mistake of treating it like Call of Duty multiplayer — sprint, shoot, repeat — and die in the first 60 seconds. This guide teaches the actual loop: drop, loot, rotate, reposition, win.

Step 1: Learn the loadout system first

Before queuing BR, you need a custom loadout. The default loadouts are bad. Here's a budget S-tier starter:

  • Primary: BP50 (AR) with the Compensator + Ranger barrel
  • Secondary: AMR9 (SMG) for close fights
  • Perk 1: Quick Fix (heal on kills)
  • Perk 2: Tracker (see enemy footprints)
  • Perk 3: Tempered (armor plate refresh)

This is the meta loadout for Verdansk in August 2026. Unlocks the BP50 at level 30 (the BP50 is in the Season 4 battle pass, free track).

Step 2: Drop cold, not hot

Hot drops (Superstore, Airport, Quarry) get you into fights in 5 seconds. Cold drops (Fields, Train Station, Boneyard) let you loot for 60 seconds and start with a gun.

For your first 10 matches, drop cold. You'll die less, learn the map, and start winning more.

Step 3: The parachute pathing trick

When the plane takes off, hold your dive button and look at the map. The fastest path to a building isn't a straight line — it's a "L" shape. Dive past your target, then turn 90° and glide back. This gets you to the building 10-15 seconds faster than a direct drop.

Step 4: Don't stand still

70% of Warzone kills are from people standing still — looting, sniping, or healing. The best players slide-cancel out of every engagement and never ADS in the open. The movement meta in 2026 is the most aggressive it's ever been.

Step 5: The buy station economy

Loadout drops cost $10K and come at fixed locations on the map. Your first 60 seconds of loot should be:

  • 1 primary weapon (any gun, will be replaced by loadout)
  • 1 armor plate
  • $5K cash for the loadout buy

Once you have your loadout, you can stop looting and start fighting.

Step 6: The circle is the enemy

Most Warzone deaths are to the circle, not to enemies. If you're outside the safe zone, you have 30 seconds to get back in or take 50 damage per second. Always plan your rotation 2 circles ahead. The gas doesn't slow down.

Step 7: The Gulag is a reset, not a loss

When you die in BR, you go to the Gulag — a 1v1 against another dead player. Win, and you redeploy. Lose, and you're spectating. The Gulag is your second chance. Learn the 3 common loadouts (shotgun, pistol, knife) and how to win each one.

What's next

Once you've won your first BR (or even just survived to top 10 consistently), the game opens up. We have a Warzone ranked guide for the new Ranked Play mode and a loadout tier list for the August 2026 meta.

FAQ

Is Warzone free-to-play?

Yes, fully F2P on PC (Battle.net), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The only paid content is the cosmetic store and the $10 battle pass per season.

What's the difference between Warzone and Warzone 2.0?

The 2026 version is back to the original Warzone (renamed from Warzone 2.0 in late 2024). It's the same engine as Modern Warfare III but with Verdansk + Rebirth Island maps and the classic loadout system.

How long does a Warzone match take?

20-30 minutes for a full BR match. Resurgence (smaller map, respawns enabled) is 8-12 minutes. Ranked Play is 15-20.

Can I play Warzone solo?

Yes, BR solos is a permanent playlist. The 2026 version made solos actually competitive (before, it was a 3-player team with two bots).

Do I need a good PC to play Warzone?

The minimum spec is an i5-6600K + GTX 1060. The recommended spec is an i7-9700K + RTX 3060. Console versions run at 60fps on last-gen, 120fps on current-gen.
