Delta Force beginner's guide: which mode to start with

Quickstart

Delta Force launched in late 2024 and the 2026 version has three distinct modes sharing one client:

  • Warfare — 32v32 conquest with vehicles, like Battlefield
  • Hazard Operations — 3-player extraction shooter like Tarkov
  • Black Hawk Down — campaign missions rebuilt in modern graphics

New players make the mistake of queuing Hazard Operations first and losing 5 hours of loot to a single death. This guide tells you which mode to start with based on what you actually want to play.

Step 1: Start with Warfare

If you've ever played Battlefield, Warfare is the mode for you. 32v32, vehicles, big maps, no permadeath. You spawn back, you re-equip, you push the objective. It's the most accessible mode and the best place to learn the maps and weapons.

  • Maps to start with: Layton Grove, Cracked, Orbital.
  • Weapons to use: the M4A1 (assault rifle) and the Vector

(SMG) — both have low recoil and forgiving TTK.

  • Roles to play: Medic is the most beginner-friendly because

you can revive teammates and self-heal.

Step 2: Skip Hazard Operations until level 30

Hazard Operations is the extraction mode. You go in with gear, you extract with loot, and if you die, you lose everything. This is not where you want to start. You'll lose your first 10 hours of loot to a headshot from a player who's been playing since 2024.

  • Level up to 30 in Warfare first (takes 5-8 hours).
  • Then start Hazard with budget loadouts (under $5K gear).
  • Always bring a self-revive or two.

Step 3: Black Hawk Down is the campaign

The Black Hawk Down missions are single-player PVE content rebuilt from the 2001 game. 8-10 hours of missions, no permadeath, no PvP. Best played last because it spoils the multiplayer map layouts.

Step 4: Learn the ammo system

Delta Force has 6 ammo types:

  • FMJ — default, no pen
  • AP — better pen, lower damage
  • HP — better damage, no pen
  • Subsonic — suppressed, lower velocity
  • Tracer — visible to enemies (avoid in PvP)
  • Buckshot — only for shotguns

Most players use FMJ or AP. Don't waste money on specialty ammo until you know why you need it.

Step 5: The meta guns in 2026

After the August 2026 patch, the meta is:

  • Assault: M4A1, AK-15, G3
  • SMG: Vector, MP7
  • DMR: SVD, Mk14
  • Sniper: M700, AWM (campaign only)

Don't level every gun. Pick one per category and level it to max — the attachments you unlock transfer to other guns in the same category.

What's next

Once you've hit level 30 and you've extracted your first loadout in Hazard, the game opens up significantly. We have a Hazard Operations loadout guide for budget and meta builds, and a Warfare map guide for the 4 maps that rotate in competitive play.

FAQ

Is Delta Force free-to-play?

Yes, fully F2P on PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and mobile. All game modes are free. Monetization is cosmetic-only (skins, banners, voice lines) plus a $10 battle pass per season.

What's the difference between Warfare and Hazard Operations?

Warfare is 32v32 conquest with vehicles, respawns, and no permadeath. Hazard Operations is 3-player extraction with permadeath and gear loss. They're two completely different games that happen to share a client.

Can I play Delta Force on console?

Yes, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have full Delta Force with cross-play. The game is best on PC due to the tactical nature of Hazard Operations, but console works fine for Warfare.

How long does it take to get good at Delta Force?

Warfare is approachable in 2-3 hours. Hazard Operations takes 15-20 hours to feel comfortable. The top 1% of players have 200+ hours.

No. All weapons and gear are unlockable with in-game currency. The premium currency (Delta Coins) buys cosmetic skins and battle pass levels. No stat boosts from purchases.
