Destiny 2 beginner's guide (2026) — what to actually do in the new player experience
Destiny 2 beginner's guide for 2026. The campaign order, subclass unlocks, Power grind, the 12 best exotics for new players, and the 2026 meta so you don't waste a week chasing the wrong quests.

The new player problem
Destiny 2 is the most punishing MMO-lite on the market for new players. The new player experience (NPE) drops you into the Cosmodrome with 17 quests, 4 vendors, 3 currencies, and a Power level that's 200 below the cap. The "play how you want" promise is real, but only after you survive the first 30 hours.
This guide is current to The Final Shape (the campaign through 2024), Episode 2: Echoes (the 2024-2025 mini-campaign), and the Monument of Triumph content update (early 2026). It assumes you want to reach the Power cap and start playing the endgame, not just wander the planets.
The guide is split into five parts: the campaign, the subclasses, the Power grind, the exotic arsenal, and the 2026 meta.
The campaign — the order that actually works
The Destiny 2 campaign is split into 7 major campaigns plus 2 mini-campaigns. The order matters — each campaign unlocks new subclasses, vendors, and a higher Power floor.
The order (skip-able, but recommended)
- New Light (the 2020 NPE) — 2 hours. Skip the dialogue, do the missions. This unlocks the Tower, the Vanguard, the Crucible, and Gambit.
- The Witch Queen (2022) — 12 hours. This is the best campaign in the game. The Void 3.0 subclass unlock is here. Do this before any other campaign.
- Lightfall (2023) — 10 hours. The Strand subclass unlock is here. The campaign is mid (people hated it on launch) but the Strand ability is the strongest in the game.
- Beyond Light (2020) — 8 hours. The Stasis subclass unlock is here. Skip the Europa post-campaign (it's filler) but the Stasis ability is the best crowd-control in the game.
- The Final Shape (2024) — 14 hours. The Prismatic subclass unlock is here. The Prismatic is the strongest subclass in the game (combines all 5 elements). This is the campaign that closes the Light and Darkness saga.
- Echoes (2024-2025) — 6 hours. The post-Final Shape mini-campaign. Skip if you only care about the endgame; play it if you want the story.
- Monument of Triumph (2026) — 4 hours. The current season's mini-campaign. The best source of Pinnacle rewards.
What to skip on a first playthrough
- The Red War (the 2017 campaign) — the campaign is no longer playable. Skip.
- Curse of Osiris and Warmind (2017-2018 campaigns) — these are the weakest campaigns in the game. Skip on a first playthrough; come back for the loot if you like.
- Seasonal content from 2020-2022 — most of this is vaulted. The content is gone, not just hidden.
The subclasses — the most important decision
Destiny 2's subclasses are the heart of the game. Each subclass has 2-3 aspects and 4-6 fragments; the combination defines your build. As of 2026, there are 5 element + 3 subclass combinations:
- Solar (3 subclasses) — the healing/grenade subclass. Best for solo play and support.
- Void (3 subclasses) — the debuff/subdued subclass. Best for team support and invisibility.
- Arc (3 subclasses) — the speed/chain subclass. Best for add-clear and movement.
- Stasis (3 subclasses) — the slow/crystal subclass. Best for crowd-control and turret builds.
- Strand (3 subclasses) — the grapple/suspend subclass. Best for movement and burst damage.
The 2026 starter picks (in order of recommendation):
- Solar Hunter (Gunslinger) — the highest-skill ceiling subclass. Strong in PvP, decent in PvE.
- Void Warlock (Devour) — the strongest solo subclass. Devour restores health on every kill, making the entire game trivial.
- Solar Titan (Sunbreaker) — the easiest subclass in the game. High survivability, decent damage. The best "I just want to shoot things" pick.
- Strand Hunter (Threadrunner) — the most fun movement subclass. The grapple is the best traversal in the game.
Skip the rest until you have a full build. The endgame builds use exotic armor synergies that take 50+ hours to farm.
The Power grind — the most boring but necessary part
Destiny 2's Power level caps the damage you can deal and the damage you can take. The cap changes every season; in 2026, the cap is 2010 (the seasonal cap, which resets every 3 months).
The efficient Power grind (2026)
- Play the Monument of Triumph campaign (4 hours) — gives you a full set of 1960 Power gear.
- Do the 3 raid-pinnacle quests (6 hours) — gives you 3 Pinnacle drops, up to 2010.
- Do the 5 weekly Powerful reward sources (5 hours) — gives you 5 more Powerful drops.
- Do the 3 daily Pinnacle sources (3 hours) — gives you 3 more Pinnacle drops.
Total: ~18 hours to hit the 2010 cap. After the cap, every drop is +1 Power above the cap; the "pinnacle grind" is the end-game.
Common Power grind mistakes
- Don't vendor-farm — the 1960 vendor gear is a starting point, not a goal. Move past it.
- Don't shard exotics — the exotic you get from a quest is the best exotic for that quest. Keep all exotics until you have 30+.
- Don't chase the perfect roll — every weapon has random perks, and the perfect roll is a 1-in-400 drop. Use a "good enough" roll and move on.
The exotic arsenal — the 12 exotics that define a new player's journey
Exotics are Destiny 2's unique weapons and armor. They drop from quests, raids, world drops, and the Monument of Triumph. The 12 exotics every new player should chase (in priority order):
Weapons (priority 1-6)
- Gjallarhorn — the most iconic weapon in Destiny. Solar rocket launcher. Drops from the "And Out Fly the Wolves" quest. The Wolfpack Rounds are the best add-clear in the game.
- Whisper of the Worm — Solar sniper. Drops from the "Whisper" mission on Io. The Whisper of the Worm is the highest single-target damage sniper in the game.
- The Lament — Solar sword. Drops from the "Lost Lament" quest. The Lament is the highest sustained damage weapon in the game for boss fights.
- Witherhoard — Kinetic grenade launcher. Drops from the "Presage" mission. The Witherhoard's blight is the best DoT weapon in the game.
- Izanagi's Burden — Kinetic sniper. Drops from the "Burden of Guilt" quest. The Izanagi's Honed Edge shot is the best single-burst damage in the game.
- Anarchy — Arc grenade launcher. Drops from the "Scourge of the Past" raid. The Anarchy's arc traps are the best area-denial weapon in the game.
Armor (priority 7-12)
- Ophidian Aspect (Warlock gauntlets) — the best Warlock exotic for PvP. The Ophidian Aspect extends melee range and weapon reload.
- Stompees (Hunter boots) — the best Hunter exotic for PvP. The Stompees double jump and increased sprint.
- Dune Marchers (Titan boots) — the best Titan exotic for PvP. The Dune Marchers extend melee range.
- Cuirass of the Falling Star (Titan chest) — the best Titan exotic for boss damage. The Cuirass buffs Thundercrash damage by 2x.
- Star-Eater Scales (Hunter boots) — the best Hunter exotic for boss damage. The Star-Eater Scales buff Gathering Storm damage by 2x.
- Felwinter's Helm (Warlock helm) — the best Warlock exotic for ability builds. The Felwinter's Helm grants an extra charged melee charge.
The 2026 meta — the builds that dominate the endgame
The 2026 meta is dominated by Prismatic (the new subclass) and the build-skill combos that maximize ability uptime. The 3 meta builds (in order of strength):
- Prismatic Solar Hunter (Gunslinger) — the highest-skill ceiling build. Combines Blade Barrage with Knife Trick for the highest burst damage in the game. Requires the Celestial Nighthawk exotic.
- Solar Warlock (Sunbracers) — the strongest solo build. Combines Solar grenades with the Sunbracers exotic for infinite grenade uptime. The Sunbracers build trivializes the entire PvE game.
- Void Titan (Heart of Inmost Light) — the strongest support build. Combines Void overshield with the Heart of Inmost Light exotic for the highest ability uptime in the game.
Skip the rest until you have the exotics. The endgame builds are gated by the exotic drop, not by the level.
What's next
Once you've hit the Power cap and have 5+ exotics, the endgame opens up. The next guide in this series covers the raid order — which raid to do first, which raid to farm, and which raid to skip.
If you want the meta right now, the Monument of Triumph season guide covers the current seasonal content, the 3 seasonal exotics, and the seasonal artifact.
