FragPunk beginner's guide: how to climb ranked in 2026
The 8 things every FragPunk player should know before their first ranked match. From the Shard Card system that breaks the game every round to the 5 heroes that carry solo queue.

Quickstart
FragPunk launched in June 2025 and hit its stride in 2026 as the most-played hero shooter outside Marvel Rivals. The core 5v5 format is familiar — pick a hero, push objectives, kill enemies — but the Shard Card system makes every round unique. Three random rule-cards are voted on at the start of each round, and they rewire gravity, ammo, headshot damage, and 50+ other mechanics. A round that started as "normal FPS" can become "headshots only" or "infinite ammo" mid-match.
Step 1: Pick 2-3 heroes to learn first
The hero pool is 20+ but only 5 dominate ranked in 2026:
- Axon (Duelist): best aim-dependent carry hero.
- Kismet (Duelist): best entry-fragger with self-sustain.
- Miko (Vanguard): best main tank with shield + ult.
- Seren (Strategist): best heal-bot for solo queue.
- Vex (Controller): best zone-control with traps.
Master 2 of these before touching others. Duelist + Strategist is the easiest solo queue combo.
Step 2: Learn the Shard Card meta
Most Shard Cards are meme picks. Learn the 8 cards that appear in 80%+ of pro matches:
- Bigger Bombs (utility damage x2)
- Heavy Rounds (headshot damage +50%)
- Rogue (no team damage, free-for-all for 5 seconds)
- Float Like a Butterfly (gravity -50%)
- Tank Up (all health x2)
- Glass Cannon (headshot = one-shot kill)
- Power Trip (ults charge 3x faster)
- Speed Demon (move speed +50%)
Veto these when you can. They're usually 50/50.
Step 3: Aim training, not hero switching
Most ranked losses at Silver/Gold are aim diff, not comp diff. Spend 15 minutes a day in the aim trainer, not queuing more games. The Kovaak's aim routines for Valorant transfer directly.
Step 4: Don't die first
The 30/30/40 rule: spend 30% of every round playing for info, 30% holding angles, 40% in active fights. New players die first because they peek every angle and push every duel.
Step 5: Communicate even with randoms
Even if no one else talks, ping enemy positions, ping when you're rotating, ping when your ult is up. Pings carry solo queue harder than voice.
What's next
Once you hit Gold in ranked, the meta shifts — Duelist becomes more important, Controllers dominate objective rounds, and the Shard Card picks that worked in Silver stop working. We have a FragPunk ranked climbing guide coming in Season 2.
FAQ
Is FragPunk free-to-play?
Yes, fully free-to-play with a $10 battle pass per season. All heroes are unlockable with in-game currency earned by playing. No pay-to-win — the Shard Card system is the same for everyone every round.
What platforms is FragPunk on?
PC (Steam, Epic), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Cross-progression works between PC and console with the same account, but cross-play between PC and console is opt-in (default off in ranked).
How long is a FragPunk match?
5v5 ranked matches are 25-35 minutes, the same as Valorant. Unranked and casual modes have a 20-minute timer with a draw if no one hits the objective threshold.
What's the best hero for solo queue?
Kismet (Duelist) is the strongest solo queue carry. He has self-heal on kills, so even if your team is throwing, you can carry rounds by out-fragging the enemy Duelist.
Can I unlock all heroes without paying?
Yes. Each hero costs 6,000 FragCoins (in-game currency) or $5 USD. A full season pass gives you 12,000 FragCoins, which unlocks 2 heroes. Or you can earn ~500 FragCoins per ranked match. A new player can unlock 3-4 heroes per season of ranked play.
