Grounded 2 Into the Abyss — first 5 hours without dying
The Into the Abyss update is Grounded 2's biggest content drop since launch. It opens up the pond for full underwater exploration, adds 4 new bugs, 8 craftable aquatic items, and a 3-chapter story quest. This guide gets you through the first 5 hours without dying.
Step 1: Get the diving bell (the obvious thing)
The first thing you need is the diving bell — the item that lets you actually breathe underwater. You can't craft it; you have to find it in the world.
How to get it:
- Progress the main story until you unlock the Brook
region (the first new underwater POI from the Into the Abyss update)
- The story quest "Into the Abyss: Part 1" directs you to a
sunken lab at the bottom of the Brook
- The diving bell is on a table in the lab's first room —
pick it up, equip it, and you can now breathe underwater for 30 seconds at a time
Important: the diving bell has a 30-second air limit per dive. You need to surface and refill between dives. Don't try to explore everything in one dive.
Step 2: Avoid the obvious trap (the new bugs)
The Into the Abyss update adds 4 new bugs. Here's the threat ladder (most to least dangerous):
Tier 1: the Abyssal Stag (boss)
- Where: the bottom of the Sunken Lab
- Health: ~3000 HP
- Attack patterns: charge attack (stun), acid spit (DoT), and
a tail swipe
- Recommended level: 8+ with tier-2 weapons
- Tip: the Abyssal Stag is the boss of the "Deep Below" story
quest. Don't try to solo it — bring 2-3 friends, or wait until you have the Stag Antlers (drop from this boss, used for the tier-3 weapons)
Tier 2: the Giant Isopod (aggressive)
- Where: the Brook, the Murky Depths
- Health: ~500 HP each
- Attack patterns: claw swipe + grab (drags you under)
- Recommended level: 4+ with tier-1 weapons
- Tip: the Giant Isopod's grab is the most-feared new attack
in the update. If you get grabbed, you take 80 damage over 4 seconds. Don't let them stack — the crowd damage is brutal
Tier 3: the Diving Bell Spider (passive)
- Where: the Brook, the surface near the water
- Health: ~200 HP
- Behavior: only attacks if you get close
- Tip: they drop the Diving Bell Spider Silk, a key
crafting material for the underwater armor set
Tier 4: the Water Boatman (neutral)
- Where: the surface of all water regions
- Health: ~50 HP
- Behavior: runs away from you
- Tip: they drop the Boatman Oil, used for the underwater
lantern
Step 3: Craft your first aquatic gear (the 8 new items)
You need 8 new items to fully explore Into the Abyss. Here's the priority order:
Priority 1 (craft immediately)
- Scuba Helmet (Head slot) — water-breathing, 60-second air
limit. Crafted at the Smithing Station using 2 Diving Bell Spider Silk + 1 Berry Leather + 1 Acorn Shell
- Fins (Legs slot) — 50% faster swim speed. Crafted using
4 Diving Bell Spider Silk + 2 Berry Leather
- Harpoon Gun (Weapon slot) — spear-fishing + underwater
combat. Crafted using 3 Boatman Oil + 2 Diving Bell Spider Silk + 4 plant fiber
Priority 2 (craft within the first hour)
- Bio-Glow Torso (Chest slot) — provides light + 20%
oxygen regen rate. Crafted using 2 Wisp Shard + 1 Diving Bell Spider Silk + 2 Berry Leather
- Aqua Boots (Feet slot) — 30% faster swim + immune to
underwater slow effects. Crafted using 3 Diving Bell Spider Silk + 2 Berry Leather
Priority 3 (craft for specific encounters)
- Reed Snorkel (Accessory) — extends air by 15 seconds.
Crafted using 2 Reeds + 1 Boatman Oil
- Underwater Lantern (Off-hand) — light underwater. Crafted
using 1 Wisp Shard + 2 Boatman Oil
- Pressure-Resistant Canteen (Consumable) — restores 50 HP
+ clears drowning debuff. Crafted using 1 Plant Fiber + 1 Fresh Water
Step 4: The story quest order
The "Deep Below" story quest has 3 chapters. Do them in this order to avoid over-leveling:
Chapter 1: "The Depths Beckon" (15-20 minutes)
- Go to the Brook's sunken lab
- Get the diving bell
- Find the first lore tablet
- Reward: Diving Bell Spider Silk recipe, 200 XP
Chapter 2: "The Murky Below" (25-30 minutes)
- Travel from the Brook to the Murky Depths
- Find the second lore tablet
- Defeat 5 Giant Isopods
- Reward: Fins recipe, 500 XP
Chapter 3: "The Deep Below" (45-60 minutes)
- Travel from the Murky Depths to the Sunken Lab
- Find the third lore tablet
- Defeat the Abyssal Stag boss
- Reward: Stag Antlers (used for tier-3 weapons), 1500 XP,
"Abyssal Slayer" title
Step 5: The 5 mistakes new players make
Based on community feedback from the first 48 hours:
Mistake 1: Trying to solo the Abyssal Stag
The boss is tuned for 2-3 players. Solo attempts at low levels will end in frustration. Either bring friends or grind to level 8+ first.
Mistake 2: Not refilling your air often enough
The diving bell's 30-second air limit feels generous until you're exploring a deep POI and the bar drops faster than you expect. Surface every 20-25 seconds. Don't push it.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the Wisp Shards
Wisp Shards are the new crafting material for underwater light sources. They spawn in the Brook, the Murky Depths, and the Sunken Lab. You'll need 4-6 of them for the Bio-Glow Torso and the Underwater Lantern. Farm them as you go.
Mistake 4: Standing still in the Murky Depths
The Murky Depths has reduced visibility. New players tend to stop and look around when they can't see — that's exactly when Giant Isopods swarm you. Keep moving, even if you can't see.
Mistake 5: Skipping the "Test the Depths" tutorial quest
The tutorial quest (unlocked after Chapter 1) walks you through the new mechanics — diving, oxygen management, the Giant Isopod threat. Skipping it is the #1 cause of early deaths in the new content.
Step 6: The first 5 hours checklist
By hour 5, you should have:
- [ ] Diving bell equipped
- [ ] Scuba Helmet + Fins crafted
- [ ] Harpoon Gun crafted
- [ ] All 3 Deep Below story chapters complete
- [ ] Abyssal Stag defeated (or attempted with friends)
- [ ] All 5 new POIs discovered (Brook, Murky Depths, Sunken
Lab, the Gloom biome if available, the Citadel biome if available)
- [ ] At least 4 of the 8 new aquatic items crafted
- [ ] At least 1 Stag Antler-tier weapon crafted
- [ ] "Abyssal Slayer" title unlocked
If you hit 8/9 of these, you're on track. If you hit 6/9 or less, slow down and grind more — the next story content (Sept's Acorn Hoard event) requires a higher base level.
What's next
After the first 5 hours, you can:
- Build a permanent underwater base (new base-building
material: the Underwater Foundation, crafted from 8 Wisp Shards + 4 Diving Bell Spider Silk)
- Farm the new bugs for materials (the Giant Isopod drops
the Isopod Carapace, used for tier-3 armor)
- Explore the Sunken Lab's hidden rooms (3 secret
areas that don't show up on the map)
- Trade with the new merchant (the **Diving Bell
Merchant** appears in the Brook during Week 2 of the update, sells exclusive cosmetic items)
