How to get started in Marvel Rivals in 2026 — beginner's guide for new players
Everything new Marvel Rivals players need to know in 2026. Game modes, roles, 36-hero roster, ranked system, monetization (all heroes free!), and a 5-hour plan to get from new to competitive-ready.

Marvel Rivals launched in Dec 2024 and is now one of the top 3 F2P hero shooters (behind Valorant and Overwatch 2). The game is 100% free to play with all 36 heroes unlocked from day 1 — no grind, no paywall, no battle pass required to access the roster.
This guide covers everything a new player needs to know in 2026.
What's Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals is a 6v6 hero shooter where you play as Marvel characters (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Storm, Hulk, etc.) in objective-based game modes (Convoy, Convergence, Domination). The game is developed by NetEase in partnership with Marvel Games.
Key features:
- 36 heroes across 3 roles (Vanguard, Duelist,
Strategist)
- All heroes free — no unlock grind
- 6v6 combat — bigger team fights than
Valorant/Overwatch
- Team-up abilities — hero pairs get bonus
abilities (e.g., Iron Man + Hulk = Gamma Boost)
- Dynamic map design — destructible
environments, vertical mobility
Game modes
Convoy (attack vs defend): The attacking team pushes a payload through 3 checkpoints. The defending team tries to hold them. Best mode for beginners — clear objective.
Convergence (control points): Both teams fight over a single capture point. First to 100% capture wins. Tied matches go to overtime.
Domination (king of the hill): Two capture points. Team that holds both for the longest wins. Most strategic mode.
Competitive (ranked only): Same modes as above but with skill-based matchmaking and rank progression.
Roles
Vanguard (tank, 12 heroes): Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Venom, Groot, Doctor Strange, Magneto, Peni Parker, Emma Frost, Thing, Angela, Angela. High HP, protect teammates, initiate fights.
Duelist (DPS, 14 heroes): Spider-Man, Iron Man, Storm, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther, Magik, Moon Knight, Psylocke, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hela, Winter Soldier, Iron Fist, Star-Lord. High damage, secure kills, carry the team.
Strategist (support, 10 heroes): Loki, Mantis, Luna Snow, Jeff the Land Shark, Cloak & Dagger, Adam Warlock, Rocket Raccoon, Invisible Woman, Squirrel Girl, Jeff. Heal allies, provide utility, enable team.
Recommended starting role: Vanguard if you like tanky heroes, Duelist if you like fragging, Strategist if you like supporting. Most new players start as Duelist (high carry potential) but switch to Strategist after a few games (lower queue times, easier to climb).
Best starter heroes
Vanguard: Captain America — balanced kit, easy to play, strong in all modes. Shield throw + dash gives him strong initiation.
Duelist: Iron Man — high damage, good mobility, forgiving kit. Repulsor blast is spammable, and Unibeam ultimate is one of the best in the game.
Strategist: Loki — high mobility, clone ultimate is fun, decent healing. Easier than Mantis (more forgiving aim) and stronger than Jeff the Land Shark (better team contribution).
The ranked system
- Bronze (1-3): Starting rank for new players
- Silver (4-6): Average players
- Gold (7-9): Above-average players
- Platinum (10-12): Good players
- Diamond (13-15): Top 5% of players
- Grandmaster (16-18): Top 1% of players
- Celestial (19-20): Top 0.1% of players
Ranked unlocks at account level 25 (achieved in ~10-15 hours of play).
Monetization (it's all free!)
- All 36 heroes: Free
- All maps: Free
- All game modes: Free
- Battle pass (optional, $10): Cosmetic
skins, emotes, nameplates. No gameplay advantage.
- Store skins (optional, $10-20 each):
Premium skins for individual heroes. Pure cosmetic.
You can play the entire game and be competitive without spending a cent. This is the best monetization model in hero shooters right now.
5-hour plan to competitive-ready
Hour 1: Complete the tutorial. Play 2-3 matches in Convoy mode. Get a feel for the game.
Hour 2: Pick a role (Vanguard recommended for beginners). Play 5-10 matches in your chosen role. Learn 1-2 heroes well.
Hour 3: Try the other roles. Play 2-3 matches as Duelist, 2-3 matches as Strategist. Understand what each role does.
Hour 4: Learn 2-3 heroes in your main role. Read their abilities, watch 1 YouTube guide per hero.
Hour 5: Play 5-10 ranked matches. You should be at Silver or Gold by now.
Tips for new players
- Don't switch heroes every game — pick 2-3
heroes in your main role and stick with them
- Communicate with your team — Marvel Rivals
has voice chat, use it
- Focus on objectives, not kills — kills help
but objectives win games
- Use cover — the game has destructible cover,
use it
- Stay with your team — 6v6 is about team
synergy, not solo plays
Common mistakes
- Playing Duelist without a team — Duelists
need a team to enable them
- Ignoring Strategists — your Strategist is
your lifeline, protect them
- Overextending — don't chase kills, stay
with your team
- Not using team-up abilities — these are
the strongest abilities in the game
