RuneScape 3 beginner's guide: how to start in 2026
The 6 things every new RuneScape player should know before their first quest. From the optimal skill path to the membership question that everyone asks.

Quickstart
RuneScape 3 (RS3) is the modern client of the 2001 browser MMO. 25+ skills, 200+ quests, and a world that's been continuously expanded for 25 years. The F2P experience is generous — 14 skills, 40+ quests, and the entire Ashdale + Lumbridge area are free forever. The $11/month membership unlocks the rest of the world.
Distinct from Old School RuneScape (OSRS), which is a 2013 reboot with separate characters and a different skill system. This guide is for RS3 only.
Step 1: Pick your skill path
RS3 has 28 skills. You don't need to train all of them. The optimal F2P path is:
- Combat (Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints,
Ranged, Magic) — start with melee, add ranged at level 40
- Gathering (Mining, Fishing, Woodcutting) — pick
1, not all 3
- Artisan (Cooking, Smithing, Crafting) — pair
with your gathering skill
- Utility (Prayer, Agility) — Agility is
important for run energy
Don't train Dungeoneering, Divination, Invention, Archaeology, or Necromancy on F2P — they're members-only skills that are very grindy.
Step 2: Do the quests in order
Quests are the best XP in RS3. The 2026 optimal quest order for new players:
- The Blood Pact (intro quest, gives you
access to Lumbridge combat areas)
- The Death of Chivalry (unlocks the
Falador area)
- One Piercing Note (unlocks the Seers'
Village area)
- The Elemental Workshop (gives you the
highest-tier F2P weapon)
These 4 quests take ~4 hours and unlock most of the F2P world.
Step 3: The membership question
Should you buy membership? The math:
- F2P forever: 14 skills, 40 quests, ~30% of
the world. Good for the first 2-3 months.
- 1 month ($11): 1-month members get 30 days
of full access. After the month, you keep everything you've earned.
- 6 months ($66): same as 1 month but cheaper
per month.
Best value: buy 1 month when you hit 500 total level (or after 3 months of F2P play, whichever comes first). One month is enough to experience the members world. Stay F2P if you don't enjoy the grind.
Step 4: Don't burn out
RS3 is a marathon, not a sprint. The biggest mistake new players make is grinding 12 hours a day and quitting in 2 weeks. The players who've been here 10+ years play 1-2 hours per day, every day.
Set a goal: 1 quest per day, 1 level per day. That pace is sustainable for years.
Step 5: Join a clan
RS3 has clan chat (the in-game equivalent of Discord). A good clan gives you:
- Free loans of higher-tier gear
- Group bossing (3-10 player PvE)
- Skill training partners
- Mentorship from veteran players
The official "RuneScape" Discord has a #clan-recruitment channel. The biggest F2P-friendly clans are "Maxed" and "Cape" and "Loot".
Step 6: Use the wiki
The RuneScape Wiki (runescape.wiki) is the best game wiki in existence. Every quest, every skill, every item has a detailed page with:
- Quest walkthroughs
- Optimal training methods
- Item drop rates
- Price history
If you're stuck, the wiki has the answer. Always check there before asking in chat.
What's next
Once you've hit 500 total level and done the recommended F2P quests, you're ready for members content. The 2026 members progression path is:
- Levels 50-70 in all skills (members
training methods are 2-3x faster)
- "The World Wakes" quest (unlocks the
Prifddinas elf city)
- First boss kill (QBD is the easiest
entry-level boss)
FAQ
Is RuneScape 3 free-to-play?
Yes, fully F2P. 14 skills, 40 quests, ~30% of the world. The $11/month membership unlocks the rest.
What's the difference between RS3 and OSRS?
RS3 is the modern client (this guide). OSRS is a 2013 reboot with a separate game, separate characters, and a different combat system. Most new players in 2026 pick OSRS because the community is more active, but RS3 has more content.
How long does it take to max?
"Max" in RS3 is 120 in all skills (or 200M XP in all skills for "true max"). Average time to 120 all: 2,000-3,000 hours of play. Average to true max: 8,000+ hours.
Can I play RuneScape on mobile?
Yes, the official mobile app is a full client. Cross-progression with PC is built in.
Is RuneScape pay-to-win?
No. The membership is a flat fee that unlocks the whole world, not a per-item purchase. There are no XP boosts, no loot boxes, no pay-to-skip mechanics. The $11/month is the only required cost.
