Best new F2P game releases — September 2026

September 2026 is shaping up to be one of the biggest months for F2P releases in 2026. Four major games are launching or getting major updates, plus two indie surprises worth your time. Here's everything F2P launching in September 2026, ranked by my excitement level.

The headline launches

Marvel Rivals Season 4: Heart of the Dragon (Sept 12)

The biggest F2P launch of the month. Season 4 adds:

  • Shang-Chi (Duelist) — the

first martial-arts Duelist, a potential Blade counter

  • Ancient One (Strategist) —

a new Strategist with portal mechanics

  • Kunlun Mountains map — a

new vertical-focused map

  • **Heart of the Dragon

battlepass** — 100 tiers, free skin for every character

Why it matters: Shang-Chi could dethrone Blade as the top Duelist, and the portal mechanics of Ancient One could open new team-up combos. Expect the meta to shift hard in the first 2 weeks.

Path of Exile 2 0.5 League (Sept 19)

The next PoE 2 league launches September 19. The 0.5 league is rumored to add:

  • A new ascendancy (the

first new ascendancy since 0.4)

  • A new league mechanic

(the "Memory" system, similar to PoE 1's Affliction)

  • 3 new skill gems
  • 50+ new unique items

Why it matters: Every PoE 2 league is a meta shakeup. The Memory system could add 100+ hours of new content and completely change the mapping meta. Plan to take a week off when it launches.

Fragpunk Season 3: Aftermath (Sept 25)

Fragpunk's third season adds:

  • 2 new heroes
  • A new map
  • A new Shard Card category

(5 new cards)

  • Ranked mode 2.0 (reworked

ranked system)

Why it matters: Fragpunk has been declining in population since Season 1. Season 3 is the make-or- break season. If the new content and ranked rework can bring back players, Fragpunk could become a real contender. If not, it joins the B-tier of hero shooters permanently.

Delta Force: Hawk Ops Extraction Mode (Sept 30)

Delta Force is adding a major extraction mode inspired by Escape from Tarkov and Arena Breakout. The new mode adds:

  • **A 30-minute extraction

match** with 50+ players per map

  • A persistent stash system

(items you extract with go to your stash)

  • A 100+ item economy
  • 8 new maps

Why it matters: The extraction genre is the hottest thing in FPS gaming in 2026 (Tarkov, Arena Breakout, Cycle Frontier, Hunt: Showdown are all thriving). Delta Force is the first F2P extraction shooter from a major publisher. If it nails the extraction loop, it could be the biggest F2P launch of 2026.

The indie surprises

Soulframe: Prelude (Sept 15)

Soulframe is the new F2P action-RPG from Digital Extremes (the Warframe studio). The Prelude update is the open beta:

  • **15+ hours of story

content**

  • 3 playable characters
  • A massive open world
  • Cosmetic-only F2P model

Why it matters: Digital Extremes has 10+ years of experience with F2P action games (Warframe is one of the most successful F2P games ever). Soulframe is their new flagship. If it's even half as good as Warframe, it's a top-5 F2P game of 2026.

Spectre Divide: Open Beta (Sept 22)

Spectre Divide is the new F2P tactical FPS with the "Duality" system (each player controls two characters at once). The open beta adds:

  • 12+ playable characters
  • 3v3 format (one player

controls 2 characters)

  • 3 maps
  • Ranked mode

Why it matters: The Duality system is genuinely innovative — it's the first FPS where you control two characters at once. If the execution is good, Spectre Divide could be the most innovative F2P FPS since Valorant. If the execution is bad, it'll be another tactical FPS that nobody plays.

What to play and when

  • September 1-11: Catch up

on existing games. The September backlog is light before the Marvel Rivals launch.

  • September 12-18: Marvel

Rivals Season 4. The new Shang-Chi meta is the most exciting thing in F2P gaming.

  • September 19-24: PoE 2

0.5 league. Plan to take time off work.

  • September 25-29: Fragpunk

Season 3. If you're already a Fragpunk player, this is for you. If not, skip.

  • September 30: Delta

Force extraction mode. The biggest F2P launch of the month.

FAQ

What's the biggest F2P launch in September 2026?

Delta Force extraction mode (Sept 30). The first F2P extraction shooter from a major publisher. Could be the biggest F2P launch of the year.

What F2P game should I play first in September?

Marvel Rivals Season 4 (Sept 12) for casual players, Path of Exile 2 0.5 league (Sept 19) for hardcore ARPG players.

Is Soulframe worth playing?

Yes if you like Warframe. Digital Extremes has 10+ years of F2P experience. The Prelude update is the open beta, so you can try it for $0.

Is Spectre Divide worth playing?

Maybe. The Duality system is innovative but the genre is crowded. Try the open beta (Sept 22) and decide for yourself.

Will any of these games be pay-to-win?

No. All 6 launches are F2P with cosmetic-only monetization. The F2P model in 2026 is the most player-friendly in history.

What's the F2P game industry trend in 2026?

Three trends:

  1. Extraction shooters are

the new hot genre (Tarkov, Arena Breakout, Cycle Frontier, Delta Force)

  1. Cross-progression is

now standard (every major F2P game supports it)

  1. **F2P models are the

cleanest ever** (cosmetic-only in most new games)
