CS2 Shanghai Major 2026 announced for November

Valve and BLAST confirmed today that the second CS2 Major of 2026 will be held in Shanghai, November 11-22. The 16-team event carries a $1.25M base prize pool (the highest non-Austin Major pool since CS:GO) and will be produced by PGL — the same production company that ran TI 2024 in Copenhagen and TI 2025 in Hamburg.

This is the first CS2 Major held in mainland China, and the first time a CS2 Major has been co-sanctioned with the Chinese Esports Association (CESA). The partnership gives the event automatic Chinese streaming distribution on Huya, Douyu, and Bilibili, with Mandarin and Cantonese broadcast desks.

What the format looks like

Same 16-team, Swiss + single-elimination playoff format as the BLAST Austin Major 2026 (which ran in July). The Swiss stage runs November 11-17 at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, with 3,000 spectators per day. The single-elimination playoff (Nov 20-22) is in the same venue, capacity 18,000.

The Chinese team quota is 4 slots (up from 2 at the Austin Major), allocated through the China Pro League (CPL) Summer 2026 standings. The Asia-Pacific Closed Qualifier (Oct 14-18) produces 2 additional slots, which historically go to teams from Mongolia, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia.

Why this Major matters

Three things make the Shanghai Major different from the Austin Major:

1. The China circuit is finally integrated. For the first time, the CPL Summer 2026 winner gets a guaranteed Major slot, and the Chinese broadcast will be on the official Major stream (not a third-party side feed). This effectively adds 4 Chinese teams to the competitive circuit that previously had to play through wildcards.

2. The map pool is changing. PGL confirmed the Shanghai Major will be the first Major to use the new CS2 map pool that drops Vertigo and adds a community workshop map (the final map will be selected by community vote on the CS2 workshop from Sep 20-30). The change is part of Valve's plan to refresh the competitive map pool every 6 months.

3. The production budget is bigger. PGL's Shanghai production is the most expensive in CS2 history, with a $14M production budget (vs $9M for Austin). The new additions: a 360-degree spectator rig, Mandarin/Cantonese/English/Japanese/Korean simultaneous broadcast desks, and a VR spectator mode for the grand final.

What it means for the competitive calendar

The Shanghai Major is the last CS2 Major of 2026, and the last event with RMR qualification for the 2027 season. The winner secures a direct invite to IEM Katowice 2027 and a $250K bonus. The top 8 finishers get direct invites to the BLAST Premier World Final 2026 (Dec 8-13 in Abu Dhabi).

For teams, this is the highest-stakes 10-day stretch of the year. The CPL Summer 2026 closes Aug 25, the RMRs run Aug 28-Sep 15, and the Asia-Pacific Closed Qualifier is Oct 14-18. Three months of qualification compressed into one — the most demanding competitive stretch in CS2 history.
