Genshin Impact 5.9 livestream recap — Nod-Krai region, Ineffa debut, and the 6.0 countdown
Genshin Impact 5.9 livestream dropped the details on the new Nod-Krai region, the dual-Element character Ineffa, the 6.0 anniversary rewards, and the return of the "Chronicled Wish" banner. Here's what matters and what's worth pulling for.

Genshin 5.9 livestream — what you need to know
The Genshin Impact 5.9 livestream aired this morning, and it was the most-watched livestream of the year. The 90-minute broadcast covered the new region, the next character banner, the 6.0 anniversary details, and a new game mode coming in the 6.0 patch.
The new region: Nod-Krai
Nod-Krai is the eighth major region in Genshin Impact, and the first to be added since Fontaine in 4.0. The region is a frozen archipelago inspired by Slavic and Norse mythology, with 5 major areas to explore:
- Borealheim — a coastal city built on a glacier, the main hub
- Vinterveld — a tundra biome with new Cryo enemies
- Rusalki Depths — an underground cavern system with Hydro and Dendro
- Aurora Steppe — a frozen grassland with new Electro enemies
- Frostspire Sanctum — a high-level domain with new artifact sets
The region's Elemental mechanic is "Polar Shift" — players can swap between two stances (Frost and Aurora) to interact with the environment. Frost stance is for climbing icy walls; Aurora stance is for gliding over chasms. The mechanic is similar to Fontaine's underwater system, in that it's required to traverse certain areas.
The new Archon Quest launches with patch 5.9 and continues through 6.0. Expect 8-10 hours of story content across both patches.
The new character: Ineffa
Ineffa is the headline 5-star character for 5.9. She's a dual-Element catalyst user — the first in the game — combining Electro and Cryo damage in a single kit. Her kit revolves around the new "Reaction Amplifier" mechanic, which boosts Superconduct and Electro-Charged damage by 40% when she triggers them.
Banner schedule:
- Phase 1 (5.9 first half): Ineffa + Chevreuse rerun
- Phase 2 (5.9 second half): Citlali + Mavuika rerun
Ineffa's signature weapon is a 5-star catalyst called "Frostbite Echo" that boosts her Reaction Amplifier damage by an additional 25%.
Should you pull?
- If you have any existing Electro or Cryo DPS (Raiden, Ayaka, Wriothesley), Ineffa is a strong support and worth pulling
- If you're saving for 6.0 anniversary (see below), you can skip — Ineffa will rerun in 6.2
- The signature weapon is skippable — a 4-star catalyst like "The Widsith" or "Magic Guide" does ~80% of the damage
The 6.0 anniversary: 10 free pulls + a free 5-star
Patch 6.0 launches in late September (estimated September 28) and is the game's third anniversary. The anniversary rewards are the most generous in the game's history:
- 10 free Intertwined Fates (10 pulls on the standard banner) — login reward
- 1 free 5-star character selector — choose from a curated list of 12 standard 5-stars
- 20% bonus resin for the first 2 weeks of the patch
- Double ley line rewards for the first 2 weeks
The free 5-star selector includes: Jean, Diluc, Mona, Keqing, Qiqi, Tighnari, Dehya, Mizuna, Xianyun, and 2 more to be announced. If you don't have Mona, Keqing, or Tighnari, save your selector for one of them — those three are the strongest in the selector pool.
The Chronicled Wish banner returns in 6.0 with a reworked pool. The 6.0 Chronicled Wish features: Raiden Shogun, Ayaka, Yelan, Hu Tao, Kazuha, Zhongli, Ganyu, Nahida, and the new Ineffa. The Chronicled Wish uses a special currency (Starglitter) that you earn by spending on the Chronicled Wish, and the pity is independent from the regular banners.
The new game mode: Theater of the Lost
Theater of the Lost is a new roguelike combat mode launching in 6.0. It's similar to Honkai Star Rail's "Memory of Chaos" — players bring 4 teams of 4 characters (16 total) and clear 6 stages of increasingly difficult content.
The mode rewards:
- 1 free 5-star character selector (separate from the anniversary selector)
- A new 5-star weapon selector
- New artifact sets (4 new sets, 2 of which are bis for Ineffa)
Theater of the Lost is the best endgame content in Genshin Impact and is worth playing even if you don't pull for the new characters. The new artifact sets alone make it worth a month of farming.
Other 5.9 changes
- Spiral Abyss cycle refresh: 9 floors with new enemy lineups, focused on Electro and Cryo
- Fishing system rework: new fish, new fishing rod (free), and a new fishing mini-game
- Map QoL: teleport waypoint cooldowns reduced from 5s to 3s
- QoL: artifact lock is now per-slot (not per-set), and the "strongbox" cost is reduced from 3 to 2
What to do in 5.9
If you're saving for 6.0:
- Don't pull on Ineffa's banner. The Chronicled Wish in 6.0 will let you pick her.
- Farm the new region's reputation rewards (Primogems, Mora, talent books)
- Save your Fragile Resin for the 6.0 launch (the new domain has the best artifact sets in the game)
If you're not saving:
- Pull Ineffa in Phase 1
- Pull her signature weapon if you have the pulls
- Use the new domain to farm her best artifact set
