Halo 2026: the Halo Studios transition to Unreal Engine 5, and what it means for Halo Infinite
Halo 2026 news. 343 Industries rebranded to Halo Studios. New Halo game in development in UE5. Halo Infinite continues with Operations through 2026. What the UE5 transition means for modders, competitive play, and the MCC.

The biggest Halo news in years
In October 2024, 343 Industries was rebranded to Halo Studios. The new studio announced a full transition to Unreal Engine 5 and a new Halo game in development. The announcement was the biggest Halo news since Halo Infinite's launch in 2021.
This article covers what the Halo Studios transition means for Halo Infinite, the new Halo game, the Master Chief Collection, and the Halo esports scene.
The Halo Studios rebrand
In October 2024, Microsoft announced that 343 Industries would be rebranded to Halo Studios. The rebrand was accompanied by a leadership change and a new development philosophy: the new Halo game will be built in Unreal Engine 5, not the proprietary Slipspace Engine that powered Halo Infinite.
The rebrand was the result of 3 years of internal restructuring at 343/Halo Studios. The restructuring followed the mixed-to-negative reception of Halo Infinite's launch (2021) and the gradual recovery through multiplayer updates and the Halo TV show (2022+).
The key changes:
- Studio name: 343 Industries → Halo Studios
- Engine: Slipspace Engine → Unreal Engine 5
- Leadership: Bonnie Ross (out 2022) → Chris Lee (interim) → Studio head TBD
- Strategy: rebuild Halo as a multi-game, multi-engine franchise
The new Halo game (in development)
Halo Studios is developing a new Halo game in Unreal Engine 5. The game is not Halo 7 (officially), but it is the next major Halo single-player game. The game is in early development as of 2026, with a target release window of 2027-2028.
What we know:
- Engine: Unreal Engine 5
- Setting: Post-Halo Infinite timeline (after the events of Halo Infinite's campaign)
- Platforms: Xbox Series X|S + PC (Steam, Microsoft Store)
- Multiplayer: TBD (will likely include both a campaign co-op and a multiplayer mode)
- Forge: TBD (Forge is the modding tool that became Halo's content-creation backbone)
- Release window: 2027-2028 (not at launch of 2026)
What we don't know:
- Title (not Halo 7, not Halo: Year One, TBD)
- Campaign structure (linear, open-world, or hybrid)
- Multiplayer structure (arena, battle royale, or hybrid)
- Monetization model (free-to-play, premium, or hybrid)
Halo Infinite in 2026
Halo Infinite continues to receive Operations (seasonal content updates) through 2026. The Operations cycle has slowed from 2022-2023 (when Operations were quarterly) to 2024-2026 (when Operations are twice-yearly). The 2026 Operations are:
- Operation: Frontline (launched Q1 2026) — new maps, new modes, new cosmetics
- Operation: Recalibration (launched Q2 2026) — new maps, new modes, new cosmetics
- Operation: Convergence (expected Q4 2026) — the final major Halo Infinite content update
After Operation: Convergence, Halo Infinite will transition to maintenance mode. The game will continue to be playable, but no new content will be added. The focus will shift to the new Halo game in development.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) in 2026
Halo: The Master Chief Collection continues to be supported in 2026. The MCC bundles Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4 in a single package. The MCC is the most-played Halo game on Steam (it was made free-to-claim in 2020 and has remained free since).
The MCC in 2026:
- Halo: CE Anniversary — playable. Modding supported.
- Halo 2: Anniversary — playable. Modding supported.
- Halo 3 — playable. Modding supported.
- Halo 3: ODST — playable. Modding supported.
- Halo: Reach — playable. Modding supported.
- Halo 4 — playable. Modding supported.
- Halo 5: Guardians — not in the MCC. Playable on Xbox only.
The MCC is the most modded Halo game thanks to the Halo Modding Discord and the Steam Workshop integration. Mods include custom maps, custom campaigns, and custom game modes.
Halo esports in 2026
Halo esports has declined significantly since the HCS (Halo Championship Series) peak in 2018. The 2026 HCS is a smaller, more regional affair than the 2018-2019 peak. The 2026 HCS is expected to focus on Halo Infinite (the last major Halo esports title) and the new Halo game (when it launches in 2027-2028).
The 2026 HCS structure:
- Halo Infinite as the primary game
- Regional qualifiers (NA, EU, APAC) instead of a global open
- Smaller prize pool (~$500K vs $2M+ in 2018-2019)
- Mix of online and LAN events
The HCS 2026 World Championship is expected in Q4 2026, with the venue TBD.
What the UE5 transition means for modders
The Unreal Engine 5 transition has major implications for Halo modders. The Slipspace Engine (used by Halo Infinite) was proprietary and required deep engine access to mod. Unreal Engine 5 is open and well-documented, which means modders will have more tools and more access.
The UE5 transition will likely:
- Increase the modding community size — more modders have UE5 experience than Slipspace experience
- Improve mod quality — UE5 tools (Nanite, Lumen, MetaHuman) enable higher-fidelity mods
- Increase mod release speed — UE5 has a faster iteration cycle than Slipspace
- Enable cross-game mods — UE5 mods can share assets with other UE5 games
The trade-off is modding access restrictions. Microsoft may restrict modding access to maintain creative control over the Halo brand.
What the UE5 transition means for competitive play
The UE5 transition has major implications for Halo competitive play. Halo's competitive scene has historically been one of the most dedicated in FPS esports. The UE5 transition will likely:
- Reset the meta — UE5 has different physics, different netcode, different input latency than Slipspace. The competitive meta will be completely new.
- Enable new competitive modes — UE5 supports large-scale multiplayer (up to 100+ players) and complex game modes (battle royale, extraction, etc.).
- Improve anti-cheat — UE5 has better anti-cheat integration than Slipspace.
- Lower the bar to entry — UE5 is the industry standard; new competitive players will have more resources to learn.
The trade-off is migration cost. Existing Halo Infinite players will need to learn the new game's mechanics, maps, and meta. The transition will be disruptive for the competitive scene.
What's next
The Halo Studios new game is targeting a 2027-2028 release window. The exact title, gameplay, and release date will be revealed in 2026-2027.
