Marvel Rivals Blade launch — what changes for the Duelist meta on August 8

Marvel Rivals Season 3.5 goes live on August 8, 2026 at 09:00 UTC after a 2-3 hour maintenance window starting at 05:00 ET. The patch has three big pillars: Blade as the new Duelist hero, a major team-up ability rework, and ranked matchmaking changes aimed at leavers.

Blade — the new Duelist

Blade is a Duelist who switches between an Ancestral Sword and a Shotgun. He can prevent incoming enemy heals for a brief window, and his ultimate (Thousand Fold Slash) draws the Sword of Dracula to leave a trail of slashes that reduce healing received.

In the August 21 follow-up patch, his Bloodline Awakening lifesteal was buffed from 60% to 65% and self-healing reduction reduced from 40% to 35%. He's tuned as a mid-range brawler with strong duel pressure against healers.

Likely meta impact: Blade displaces Magik and Psylocke as the off-tank Duelist of choice in coordinated play. His shotgun-OR-sword combo gives him range flexibility that the rest of the Duelist roster lacks.

The team-up rework

Two team-ups are being removed:

  • Guardian Revival (Mantis + Star-Lord using Adam

Warlock's regen) — gone

  • Atlas Bond (Luna Snow + Iron Fist) — gone

Two team-ups are being added:

  • Duality Dance (Adam Warlock + Luna Snow) — powers up

Luna's attacks based on damage she received

  • Vibrant Vitality (Mantis anchor) — when paired

with Groot, his walls heal allies; when paired with Loki, his healing fields grant a damage boost

Plus several swaps:

  • Loki removed from Ragnarok Rebirth
  • Iron Fist joins Chilling Assault (Luna Snow)
  • Star-Lord joins Rocket Network
  • Blade added to Cloak & Dagger's Lunar Force

Net effect: Luna Snow's team-up identity changes from tank-anchor to damage-sponge / heal-buffer. Mantis becomes more central to support comps.

Ranked matchmaking and AFK rules

Competitive gets the biggest non-balance change in months:

  • Bronze, Silver, Gold: queue solo or in non-full

five-stacks

  • Platinum, Diamond, Grandmaster: max team size 3
  • Celestial and above: max team size 2
  • Disconnect within 70s of match start: match invalid,

T1 penalty to the leaver

  • Disconnect after 70s: scaled penalties based on time

offline

  • AFK detection before 70s: match cancelled, **T2

penalty**

  • AFK detection after 70s: penalty only if the team

loses

Quick Match AFK penalties:

  • 1st offense: warning
  • 2nd: 15 minutes
  • 3rd: 30 minutes
  • 4th: 1 hour
  • 5th+: 8 hours

Net effect: lower ranks can still five-stack, but the climb to high elo is much more solo-friendly. Expect less GM-boosting services — Celestial is now a real solo-or-duo gate.

Chat moderation

NetEase added an automated chat-moderation system that reads text and voice chat in real time. Players get a new Custom Muted Words filter in settings. Faction Tab is added to chat so you can talk only to your pre-match faction. Emojis now work while KO'd and at the battle results screen.

The Queen's Codex event

Limited-time event running August 8 to early September. Players earn XP to level up rewards, including The Thing — Symbiote Thing costume (free). Premium Codex adds the Hela — Queen in Black costume and a dynamic spray. Premium is perpetual once unlocked — no time limit.

Twitch Drops

August 8 to September 5, 2026. Rewards include the Mantis — Will of Galacta costume bundle.

Ranked rewards

  • Gold rank: Blade Emerald Blade costume unlock
  • Platinum + Diamond: new nameplate frames
  • Grandmaster and above: Crests of Honor

FAQ

When does Blade unlock?

August 8, 2026, after the maintenance window ends. The patch deploys at 09:00 UTC.

Will my MMR reset?

No. MMR is preserved across the 3.5 patch. There is no soft reset, only the standard ranked season soft reset every 3 months.

Are the rank team-size limits permanent?

NetEase is positioning them as a Season 3.5 experiment. They will be evaluated at mid-season and at the Season 4 launch. High-elo players have been requesting them for months, so expect them to stick.

Can I queue with friends in Celestial now?

Only as a duo. Celestial was already a max-2 effectively; this codifies it.

Is the chat moderation automatic or report-based?

Both. The automated system scans voice and text in real time. Player reports still work and feed the same moderation backend.

Will Blade be in the next Battle Pass?

No. Blade unlocks for free as the Season 3.5 launch hero. His skins and cosmetics are sold separately through the Polarity Edge, Emoji, and Dynamic Mood bundles.
