Marvel Rivals Season 4 preview — Phoenix, Gambit, Klyntar, and the big hero rework

Season 4 launches September 12

Marvel Rivals Season 4 — "Heart of the Dragon" — launches September 12, 2026 at 09:00 UTC. The season is the biggest since launch: 2 new heroes (Phoenix and Gambit), a new endgame map (Klyntar), a major balance pass (the largest since launch), and the second annual Battle Pass expansion. This preview covers every confirmed change and what it means for the ranked meta.

The new heroes

Phoenix — the new Duelist

Phoenix is the Season 4 launch Duelist. The kit:

  • Primary fire: Flame Burst — mid-range hitscan with a 30-round magazine, similar to Star-Lord's pistol.
  • Secondary fire: Fire Blast — short-range cone AOE, similar to Human Torch's primary.
  • Ability 1: Telekinesis — 1.5-second lift on a single target, similar to Scarlet Witch's lift.
  • Ability 2: Phoenix Down — self-revive on death, but only once per match. The revive has a 5-second channel and a 1-second vulnerability window.
  • Ultimate: Dark Phoenix — 8-second transformation that swaps the kit to the Dark Phoenix kit (full AOE fire damage, no fall-off).

The Phoenix kit is the highest skill-ceiling Duelist in the game. The Telekinesis + Fire Blast combo is a guaranteed kill on any squishy, and the Dark Phoenix ultimate is the most powerful transformation in the game. Phoenix's pick rate is expected to be 30-40% on launch, dropping to 15-20% as the meta settles.

Best team-ups: Phoenix + Blade (the Season 4 exclusive team-up), Phoenix + Storm (the existing elemental team-up), Phoenix + Luna Snow (the existing damage boost team-up).

Gambit — the new Strategist

Gambit is the Season 4 launch Strategist. The kit:

  • Primary fire: Kinetic Cards — long-range projectile, similar to Hawkeye's primary.
  • Secondary fire: Charged Cards — 2-second charge to release a high-damage single card, similar to Punisher's frag launcher.
  • Ability 1: Staff Strike — melee combo that deals AOE damage and applies a slow, similar to Thor's hammer.
  • Ability 2: Royal Flush — 3-second AOE heal that scales with the number of allies inside, similar to Luna Snow's heal.
  • Ultimate: 52 Pickup — 10-second transformation that gives every ally in the AOE a 50% damage boost.

Gambit's kit is the most balanced Strategist in the game — every ability has both an offensive and defensive use, and the Royal Flush is the best heal in the game for grouped fights. Gambit's pick rate is expected to be 20-30% on launch, settling at 10-15%.

Best team-ups: Gambit + Rogue (the existing X-Men team-up), Gambit + Storm (the existing X-Men team-up), Gambit + Magik (the new Season 4 team-up).

The new map: Klyntar — Throne of Knull

Klyntar — Throne of Knull is the Season 4 endgame map. The map is a 6v6 single-objective KOTH (King of the Hill) map set on Knull's throne world. The map's unique mechanic is symbiote corruption — every player in the center AOE for 5+ seconds gains 20% damage and 20% damage taken (the "corrupted" buff). The buff stacks up to 3 times (60% damage / 60% damage taken).

The map is designed to favor aggressive team compositions — the corruption buff rewards pushing into the center, but the increased damage taken punishes greed. The meta on Klyntar is expected to favor dive compositions (Venom, Spider-Man, Magik) over poke compositions (Hawk-Eye, Punisher, Star-Lord).

The Season 4 balance pass

The Season 4 balance pass is the largest since launch. 37 heroes are getting changes — 22 buffs, 12 nerfs, and 3 reworks. The biggest changes:

Major buffs

  • Storm — damage increased by 15% across all abilities, ultimate cooldown reduced from 120s to 100s.
  • Scarlet Witch — Telekinesis lift duration increased from 1.0s to 1.3s, ultimate damage increased by 20%.
  • Mantis — healing increased by 25%, sleep duration increased from 1.5s to 2.0s.

Major nerfs

  • Hela — damage decreased by 20% across all abilities, ultimate damage decreased by 30%.
  • The Punisher — frag launcher damage decreased by 15%, turret health decreased by 20%.
  • Spider-Man — web swing speed decreased by 15%, Web Bomb radius decreased by 20%.

Reworks

  • Iron Man — the entire kit is getting reworked. The new kit is focused on sustained AOE damage (the "Iron Legion" ultimate summons 4 drones that fire on nearby enemies). The rework is the most-requested in the game's history.
  • Loki — the clone mechanic is being replaced with a teleport mechanic. The new kit is focused on single-target burst damage and confusion.
  • The Hulk — the rage mechanic is being replaced with a shield mechanic. The new kit is focused on sustained team fight presence.

The Battle Pass expansion

The Season 4 Battle Pass is the second annual expansion, with 80 tiers (up from 50 in the base Battle Pass). The new tiers include:

  • Free tiers (1-20): 1 new skin, 1 new spray, 1 new emote, 500 Lattice
  • Premium tiers (21-50): 2 new skins, 1 new spray, 1 new emote, 1,500 Lattice
  • Premium+ tiers (51-80): 3 new skins (1 Mythic), 2 new sprays, 1 new emote, 3,000 Lattice

The Mythic skin is the Phoenix skin (the new hero's base skin, upgraded to Mythic rarity). The Mythic skin is the first "hero launch" Mythic — every future hero will get a launch Mythic skin.

The ranked meta shift

The Season 4 ranked meta is expected to shift significantly from the current Season 3.5 meta. The biggest shifts:

  • Phoenix enters the Duelist pool, pushing the current top Duelists (Blade, Human Torch, Magik) down.
  • Gambit enters the Strategist pool, pushing the current top Strategists (Luna Snow, Mantis, Adam Warlock) down.
  • Storm, Scarlet Witch, Mantis buffs push the magic-damage meta back to the top of the tier list.
  • Hela, The Punisher, Spider-Man nerfs push the hitscan and dive meta back to the middle of the tier list.
  • Iron Man, Loki, Hulk reworks give new life to the 3 oldest heroes in the game.

What to watch for

The Season 4 launch will be the most-watched Marvel Rivals event in the game's history. The expected launch event schedule:

  • September 12, 09:00 UTC — Season 4 launches globally
  • September 12-14 — Launch weekend double XP and Lattice
  • September 15-19 — First ranked placement window
  • September 20-22 — First big balance patch (if needed)
  • September 26-28 — First major tournament (MRWC Season 4 Open)

The next article in this series will cover the post-launch meta analysis after the first weekend of ranked play.
