The biggest mobile esports event in SEA
The Mobile Legends M-Series is the annual Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) World Championship. The 2026 edition (M8) is the biggest mobile esports event in Southeast Asia, with 16 teams from 8+ regional MPL (Mobile Legends Professional League) qualifiers competing for a $1M+ prize pool.
This article covers the M8 format, the regional qualifiers, the top contenders, and why M8 matters for the Indonesian esports scene.
What is the M-Series?
The M-Series is the annual Mobile Legends World Championship, organized by Moonton (the developer of MLBB). The M-Series started in 2019 as the "Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championship" (M1) and has been held annually since.
The M-Series is:
- The biggest mobile esports event in SEA — the largest single mobile esports tournament by viewership
- The biggest mobile MOBA event in the world — larger than LoL Wild Rift, Arena of Valor, or Pokemon Unite
- The biggest esports event in Indonesia — M4 (2023) and M5 (2024) were the most-watched esports events in Indonesian history
The M-Series is the pinnacle of the MLBB competitive scene. Every MPL team (Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, LATAM, MENA, etc.) competes to qualify.
The 2026 M-Series (M8) format
The 2026 M-Series follows the same format as M6 and M7:
- 16 teams from 8+ regional qualifiers
- Group stage — 4 groups of 4 teams, single round-robin. Top 2 from each group advance to the playoff bracket.
- Playoff bracket — 8 teams, double-elimination, Bo5 (Bo3 for the first round)
- Grand Final — Bo7
- $1M+ prize pool — the exact prize pool is TBD but is expected to be consistent with M6 ($1M) and M7 ($1M+)
The M8 is expected to run in Q4 2026 (October-December 2026). The exact dates and venue will be confirmed by Moonton in Q3 2026.
The 8+ regional qualifiers
The 16 M8 teams qualify through 8+ regional MPL (Mobile Legends Professional League) qualifiers:
- MPL Indonesia — 3-4 teams. Indonesia is the most competitive MPL region and the largest MLBB player base.
- MPL Philippines — 3-4 teams. The Philippines is the second-most competitive MPL region.
- MPL Malaysia/Singapore — 1-2 teams. The merged Malaysian + Singaporean league.
- MPL Brazil — 1-2 teams. Brazil is the largest MLBB market in South America.
- MPL LATAM — 1 team. The Latin American region (Mexico, Argentina, etc.).
- MPL MENA — 1 team. The Middle East + North Africa region.
- MPL Cambodia — 1 team. The Cambodian region.
- MPL Mekong — 1 team. The Mekong region (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam).
- M-Series Wildcard — 1-2 teams. Wildcard teams from other regions.
The 16 teams are split across the 8+ regional qualifiers, with the exact allocation depending on regional rankings.
The 3 teams to watch at M8
The 2026 M8 will see the same dominant teams that have won recent MLBB events. The 3 teams most likely to win M8:
1. ONIC Esports (Indonesia) — the favorite
Why: ONIC Esports is the most successful Indonesian MLBB team. The team has won multiple MPL Indonesia championships and is a perennial M-Series top-3 finisher. ONIC's roster (the most recent at the time of writing) is the most experienced Indonesian roster.
2. Blacklist International (Philippines) — the dark horse
Why: Blacklist International is the most successful Filipino MLBB team. The team won M3 (2021) and is a perennial M-Series top-3 finisher. Blacklist's roster is the most internationally experienced Filipino roster.
3. Team Liquid ID or RRQ (Indonesia) — the wild card
Why: Team Liquid ID and RRQ are the other top Indonesian MLBB teams. Both have won multiple MPL Indonesia championships. The Indonesian qualifier is the most competitive in the world, and any of the top 3 Indonesian teams could win M8.
Why M8 matters for the Indonesian esports scene
The M-Series is the biggest esports event for Indonesian fans. The reasons:
- MLBB is the most-played mobile game in Indonesia. Indonesia has 30+ million monthly active MLBB players, the largest MLBB player base in the world.
- The MPL Indonesia is the most-watched MPL region. MPL Indonesia has 5x the viewership of the next-largest MPL region (Philippines).
- Indonesian teams dominate the M-Series. Indonesia has won the most M-Series titles (M1, M3, M4, M5 + co-winners).
- M-Series events are held in Indonesia. M4 (2023) was held in Jakarta, M5 (2024) was held in Kuala Lumpur + Jakarta. M6 (2025) and M7 (2026) had Indonesian venue components.
- The Indonesian esports economy is built on MLBB. Mobile esports is the largest segment of the Indonesian esports market, and MLBB is the largest game in that segment.
The M-Series is the single most important event in the Indonesian esports calendar. A win for an Indonesian team at M8 is a national event.
