Marvel Rivals review: the hero shooter that made Overwatch nervous

Marvel Rivals in 2026 is the best hero shooter in the West. 35+ Marvel characters, deep team-up system, 6v6 combat, and a Season 3.5 update that actually fixed the meta. Genuinely recommended for anyone who likes team shooters.

Marvel Rivals review: the hero shooter that made Overwatch nervous

Marvel Rivals is the best Western hero shooter in 2026, and the recent Season 3.5 update (Blade + team-up rework) made it even better. After 9 months of play, this is the most polished hero shooter on the market — and the one that forced Overwatch 2 to actually try harder.

What works

The team-up system

This is the single best mechanic in any hero shooter. Pairing specific heroes on your team unlocks bonus abilities that change the dynamic of every fight. The Season 3.5 rework (Duality Dance, Vibrant Vitality) added two new team-ups and removed two underperforming ones, which the community had been asking for since launch.

In ranked, the team-up meta is the single most important strategic layer. A team with no team-ups loses to a coordinated team that has them, regardless of individual skill. This forces composition thinking that other hero shooters don't have.

The roster

35+ characters across Marvel IPs (Avengers, X-Men, Guardians, Midnight Sons, Champions, Wakanda). Each hero has a unique kit with team-up synergies. The Season 3.5 Blade addition is the best-designed new hero since launch — the sword-and-shotgun kit creates genuine build variety within the Duelist role.

The combat

6v6 with destructible environments is the right call. The destructible terrain (you can break walls, create new sightlines, blow up floors) makes every match play differently. The combat is fast but not as fast as Overwatch 2 — closer to Valorant in pace.

The post-launch support

NetEase has shipped 3 full seasons + 2 mid-season updates in 9 months. Each patch has new heroes, new maps, balance changes, and a live event. The Season 3.5 Blade update is the most substantial mid-season patch yet, with team-up rework, ranked MMR overhaul, and a new hero all in one drop.

What doesn't

NetEase publishing concerns

This is the biggest risk to Marvel Rivals. NetEase's track record with Western games is mixed (they pulled out of several regions after 2023 disputes). The game is great now, but there's no guarantee of long-term support. If NetEase loses interest or pulls the game, there's no migration path.

Compare to Overwatch 2 (Blizzard/Activision — bigger company, more guaranteed long-term support) or Valorant (Riot — well-funded parent company, deep pockets).

Hero balance issues

Some heroes feel mandatory in ranked — Storm, Scarlet Witch, and (post-3.5) Mantis with the Vibrant Vitality team-up. The dev team is iterating on balance faster than most hero shooters, but the meta still has 3-4 "must-pick" heroes per role.

Anti-cheat edge cases

The PC version has had occasional anti-cheat false positives that have affected legitimate players. The dev team has been responsive (manual review for flagged accounts), but it remains a problem.

Should you play it?

Yes, if you like hero shooters. Marvel Rivals is the most fun hero shooter in 2026 and the most accessible (free, low PC requirements, casual-friendly ranked). The team-up system alone makes it worth playing over Overwatch 2.

Wait, if you're burned out on hero shooters or if the NetEase publishing concerns worry you. The game could be sunset in 2-3 years if NetEase pulls Western support.

Skip, if you don't like team-based shooters. Marvel Rivals is fundamentally a 6v6 team game — solo play is not the design intent.

FAQ

Is Marvel Rivals free to play?

Yes — full game, all 35+ heroes, all maps. Optional purchases are cosmetic only.

Can I play it on a low-end PC?

Yes — Marvel Rivals runs on Intel UHD 620 at 30+ FPS on low settings. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are well-optimized.

Is there cross-play?

Yes — full cross-play between PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

How long are the queues?

Average ranked queue: 2-4 minutes at peak times. Unranked queue: under 1 minute at most times. Off-peak can be 5-10 minutes for ranked.

Is ranked competitive?

Yes — 9 divisions (Bronze to Celestial), season soft reset every 3 months. The Season 3.5 added team-size caps by rank, which reduced leavers in high-rank matches.

Will NetEase keep supporting it?

That's the $1B question. NetEase has committed to a 5-year roadmap, but they've also pulled out of Western markets before. Best-case scenario: 5+ years of support. Worst-case: 2-3 years then sunset.
