F2P RPGs in 2026 are in a golden age — the genre is more popular than ever, with Path of Exile 2 finally giving Diablo 4 real competition, Genshin Impact continuing to dominate the gacha RPG space, and the Chinese gacha RPGs (Wuthering Waves, ZZZ) starting to challenge HoYoverse's dominance.

This list ranks 12 of the most popular F2P RPGs on PC in 2026, from the genre-defining S-tier to the dated F-tier.

Methodology

I ranked these on five criteria, weighted equally:

  1. Story depth — Main campaign + side content
  2. Build variety — How many viable builds

per class/spec

  1. Endgame — Hours of meaningful progression

at the level cap

  1. F2P accessibility — Can a new player

reach endgame without paying?

  1. Live-service cadence — Patch frequency

I deliberately excluded:

  • MMORPGs (covered in best-f2p-mmorpg-2026)
  • Subscription RPGs (FFXIV, ESO)
  • Mobile-only RPGs (covered in mobile tier list)

S-Tier: Genre-defining

Path of Exile 2

PoE 2 is the best ARPG ever made. The campaign is the longest in the genre (3 acts, 100+ hours), the skill tree is the deepest in gaming (1,500+ nodes, 200+ keystones), the build variety is unmatched (every class has 50+ viable builds at endgame), and the F2P model is the most generous in the genre (no pay-to-win, the $30 stash tabs are the only recommended purchase). The reason it's S-tier: the Atlas endgame is the best in the genre. The reason it's #1: the campaign doesn't feel like a tutorial (it's actually good).

Genshin Impact

Genshin is the most popular F2P gacha RPG ever made. The open world is the best in the gacha genre (the Sumeru and Fontaine expansions are genuinely gorgeous), the character roster is the deepest (80+ characters as of 5.8, every one with a unique playstyle), the story is surprisingly good (the Sumeru Archon Quest is one of the best RPG stories in the last 5 years), and the F2P model is generous (you can clear all content with 4-star characters if you know what you're doing). The reason it's S-tier: the character animations are the best in any game. The reason it's #2: the gacha rates are 0.6% for a 5-star, which is brutal compared to PoE 2's deterministic loot.

Diablo Immortal

Diablo Immortal in 2026 is a much better game than the 2022 launch. The microtransactions are still aggressive, but the F2P player can hit max rank and do 90% of the endgame content without paying. The combat is the best on mobile, the seasonal content cadence is excellent, and the Paragon system adds deep endgame progression. The reason it's S-tier: the combat feel. The reason it's #3: the mobile-first design is showing its age on PC.

A-Tier: Excellent

Honkai: Star Rail

Star Rail is the turn-based sister game to Genshin. The combat is the best turn-based RPG ever made (the Break mechanic is genuinely innovative), the story is more linear but deeper than Genshin's, the character roster is more focused (30+ characters, each with a clearer niche), and the F2P model is generous (the Stellar Jade income is enough for a guaranteed 5-star every 2-3 months). The reason it's A-tier, not S-tier: the endgame is repetitive (Memory of Chaos is just "kill 2 bosses with a timer"), and the gacha rates are the same as Genshin's.

Lost Ark

Lost Ark is the most polished MMOARPG ever made. The isometric ARPG combat is the best in the genre, the raids are the most mechanically complex in any MMO (the 6-tier difficulty system rewards mastery), and the F2P model is fair (you can hit the endgame without spending). The reason it's A-tier: the population recovered after the 2023 controversy (the bot ban waves fixed the economy). The reason it's not S-tier: PvP is dead in the West.

Path of Exile

PoE 1 is still the best ARPG-as-MMO in the non-sequel category. The campaign is excellent, the Atlas endgame is the deepest in the genre, the trade economy is player-driven, and the F2P model is genuinely free (the $30 stash tabs are the only recommended purchase). The reason it's A-tier, not S-tier: PoE 2 exists, and most of the dev attention has shifted there. 100k+ concurrent on Steam at league launch, 30k+ between leagues.

B-Tier: Strong foundation

Wuthering Waves

Wuthering Waves is the Kuro Games competitor to Genshin Impact. The open world is more exploration-focused (the wall-running and grappling mechanics are the best in any gacha game), the combat is more action-focused (the echo system is more complex than Genshin's artifact system), the story is more mature (the Act 9 twist is one of the most-discussed story moments in gacha history), and the F2P model is generous. The reason it's B-tier, not A-tier: the launch was rough (the 1.0 story was rushed, the endgame was empty), and the population has plateaued at 10M+ players (vs Genshin's 60M+).

Black Desert Online

BDO is the most beautiful MMORPG ever made. The character creator is the best in any game (you can spend 2 hours in it), the action combat is the best in the MMO space, the lifeskilling system is the deepest in the genre, and the node war PvP is the most tactical. The reason it's B-tier, not A-tier: the F2P model is predatory (you can technically play for free, but you'll spend $30 on convenience items within a month). The reason it's not F-tier: the gameplay is genuinely excellent.

Throne and Liberty

Throne and Liberty is the Amazon-published MMORPG that's become the #1 F2P action-MMO in 2026. The combat is the best action-MMO combat ever (the morphing weapons system is genuinely innovative), the open-world PvP events are the best MMO PvP since GW2's World vs World, and the dynamic weather system affects PvP outcomes. The reason it's B-tier, not A-tier: the gear grind at endgame is Korean-grindy (200+ hours to reach the top tier). 50k-80k concurrent on Steam.

C-Tier: Solid but dated

Neverwinter

Neverwinter is the best D&D-based F2P MMO on the market. The combat is action-paced, the campaigns are based on actual D&D modules, the F2P model is fair (you can hit the level cap without spending), and the Foundry toolset lets players create content. The reason it's C-tier: the endgame is grind-heavy, the PvP scene is dead, and the population is small (8k+ concurrent on Steam).

Star Wars: The Old Republic

SWTOR is the best story-driven MMO on the market. The 8 class stories are genuinely excellent (the Sith Warrior story is one of the best KOTOR-era Star Wars content ever made), the voice acting is the best in the genre, and the F2P model is generous. The reason it's C-tier: the endgame has been in maintenance mode since 2022, and the population is small but loyal (5k+ concurrent on Steam).

D-Tier and below

No D-tier or F-tier this round. The F2P RPG space is healthy enough that even the dated entries are worth a try. If we expanded to 20 games, the bottom 5 (Blade & Soul, Aion, Flyff Universe, etc.) would be D or F-tier.

The RPGs I'm watching for 2027

  • Ashes of Creation — Steven Sharif's

node-based PvX MMO. Currently in alpha. Has the most ambitious design document in the genre.

  • Blue Protocol: Star Resonance

Anime action-MMO, Amazon is rumored to be bringing it West in 2027

  • Path of Exile 3 — Grinding Gear Games

is rumored to be working on PoE 3 after the PoE 2 launch stabilizes

  • Genshin Impact 6.0 — The Snezhnaya

expansion in 2027 will be the final major region

  • Honkai: Star Rail 4.0 — The Amphoreus

expansion in 2027 is rumored to introduce the first new path
