Marvel Rivals Season 4 launches Sept 12 — Phoenix, Gambit, and the 37-hero balance pass explained
Marvel Rivals Season 4 launches Sept 12, 2026 with Phoenix and Gambit as the 38th and 39th heroes, plus a 37-hero balance pass. Launch window is the best time to start (free battle pass + new-player quests).

What's new in Season 4
Marvel Rivals Season 4 launches Sept 12, 2026 — the biggest content patch in the game's history. NetEase is shipping 2 new heroes, a 37-hero balance pass that reworks the entire roster, 3 new maps, and a reworked ranked system. The launch window is the best time to start playing — NetEase runs a free Season 4 battle pass for the first 2 weeks plus new-player quests that reward a full cosmetic set.
The 2 new heroes
Phoenix (Duelist)
Phoenix is a damage-over-time duelist with a self-revive kit. The kit has 3 abilities + an ultimate:
- Primary fire: Flame thrower, 8m range, 50 DPS, 30-round magazine
- Ability 1 — Heat Haze: Self-cleanse + brief invincibility frames (1s)
- Ability 2 — Fire Wall: Place a 6m line of fire that blocks sight + damages on contact
- Ultimate — Dark Phoenix Ascension: Transform into Dark Phoenix for 12s; flight + amplified fire damage + 2x health
Why Phoenix matters: The 2 duelist slots in the typical Season 4 comp are Storm and Spider-Man. Phoenix is the 3rd duelist that teams will swap in for AoE-focused maps (Midtown, Yggsgard). The self-revive is the strongest duelist mechanic in the game — comparable to D.Va's pilot reset in Overwatch.
Key matchup: Phoenix vs Storm. The 2 ranged duelists trade damage in the mid-range; Phoenix wins at 8m (the flame thrower range), Storm wins at 15m+ (the lightning burst).
Gambit (Strategist)
Gambit is a support strategist with a card-throw kit. The kit has 3 abilities + an ultimate:
- Primary fire: Kinetic card throw, 25m range, 60 damage per card (3 cards per swing)
- Ability 1 — Royal Flush: Throw 5 charged cards that explode on impact
- Ability 2 — Sticky Fingers: Throw a card that sticks to enemies + detonates after 2s for 100 damage
- Ultimate — Cajun Flare: Drop a giant energy card that creates a 10m fire zone for 8s
Why Gambit matters: The 2 strategist slots in the typical Season 4 comp are Luna Snow and Cloak & Dagger. Gambit is the 3rd strategist that teams will swap in for damage-focused maps (Wakanda, Kyln). The card-throw kit has the highest damage of any strategist in the game — comparable to Ana's biotic grenade in Overwatch.
Key matchup: Gambit vs Luna Snow. The 2 strategists trade utility at mid-range; Gambit wins on damage (higher DPS), Luna Snow wins on healing (higher HPS).
The 37-hero balance pass
The Season 4 patch is the largest balance pass in Marvel Rivals history. Every existing hero gets at least 1 change — most get 2-3 changes. Highlights:
- Storm: Lightning burst damage +15% (the meta's #1 duelist, was already strong)
- Spider-Man: Web swing cooldown reduced 12s → 10s (the meta's #2 duelist, was already fast)
- Luna Snow: Heal per second +8% (the meta's #1 strategist, was already strong)
- Iron Man: Beam damage -10% (was the meta's #1 carry, the nerf opens the door for new picks)
- Hulk: Smash damage +20% (the meta's weakest vanguard, the buff is the largest in the patch)
- Mantis: Damage per spike +30% (the meta's weakest strategist, the buff is the largest in the patch)
The patch notes (3,200 words) drop on Sept 10, 2 days before launch. The competitive meta will take 1-2 weeks to stabilize after launch.
The 3 new maps
Season 4 adds 3 new maps to the competitive rotation:
- Wakanda: A 3-lane map inspired by Black Panther's homeland. Vertical terrain (Bast's temple is on a cliff), 2 capture points, 1 payload segment.
- Kyln: A single-lane map inspired by the cosmic prison. Wide open mid-range, 1 capture point, 1 payload segment. Designed for duelist-heavy comps.
- Knowhere: A 2-lane map inspired by the Guardians of the Galaxy. Mixed terrain (urban + alien ruins), 1 capture point, 1 payload segment.
The map pool is now 9 maps (3 convoy, 3 domination, 3 hybrid). The competitive queue is best-of-3, with the 3rd map picked from a random selection of 3.
The reworked ranked system
The Season 4 ranked system has 3 changes:
- Bronze → Grand Master (was Bronze → Celestial). The 9-rank ladder is more granular — the average player climbs 2-3 ranks per season.
- Placement matches reduced from 10 → 5. New players hit their starting rank in 5 wins/losses instead of 10.
- Demotion protection for 3 games after a rank-up. New rank? You have 3 games of "rank-up shield" — losses don't drop you.
Why start playing now
The Season 4 launch window (Sept 12-26) is the best time to start playing Marvel Rivals:
- Free Season 4 battle pass for the first 2 weeks (all 50 tiers unlocked)
- New-player quests that reward a full cosmetic set (5 skins + 5 sprays + 5 nameplates)
- Largest balance patch ever — the meta is in flux, so old player skill advantage is at its lowest
- 2 new heroes — Phoenix and Gambit are interesting on day 1, but every player will be learning them
The OFFLANE Marvel Rivals Season 4 hero tier list covers the new meta in depth.
