Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls launches August 6 — the F2P Marvel tag fighter explained

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls launched August 6, 2026 on PS5 and PC, the first new fighting game from Bandai Namco's Soulcalibur team since the studio's partnership with Marvel Games was announced in 2023. It's a 4v4 tag-team fighter with a launch roster of 16 characters, an ongoing seasonal content model, and a free PS Plus DLC pack for the first month.

The basics

  • Developer: Bandai Namco Studios (Soulcalibur

team)

  • Publisher: Bandai Namco (with Marvel Games)
  • Engine: Custom Unreal Engine 5 build,

shared tech with Tekken 8

  • Platforms: PS5, PC (Steam) at launch
  • Price: Standard edition $59.99 / Deluxe

Edition $89.99

  • Game modes: 1v1 ranked, 2v2 tag (the

signature mode), 4v4 free-for-all, online lobbies with 4-player team rooms, training, story

  • Netcode: Rollback (8 frames), same engine

as Tekken 8

Launch roster (16 characters)

Confirmed at launch:

  • Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man,

Storm, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Captain Marvel, Black Panther

  • X-Men: Wolverine, Storm, Magneto,

Psylocke

  • Spider-Verse: Spider-Man, Spider-Woman
  • Street-level: Ghost Rider, Doctor Strange
  • Cosmic: Doctor Doom, Silver Surfer

The roster is deliberately Marvel-skewed rather than comic-accurate — Storm appears on both the Avengers and X-Men lists, but only one version is playable (the Mohawk-storm design from the 90s X-Men era). Doctor Doom and Magneto are both playable as villain leads.

The 4v4 tag format

Marvel Tokon's signature mode is 4v4 tag team — you bring 4 characters, swap on the fly, and play 2 active at a time:

  • Point character: the one currently

fighting

  • Assist character: tagged in via the

"Marvel Snap" mechanic (3 per round)

  • Bench: 2 more characters, switchable

between rounds

  • Hyper Combo: 4-player team super

move, costs the full Hyper gauge (built by combo chains + assists)

The format borrows from Marvel vs. Capcom and the more recent Marvel Rivals (6v6 hero shooter). Bandai Namco's twist is the "Soul Gauge" — every character has a secondary resource that powers tag-specific moves when you swap, similar to the V-Trigger system in Street Fighter V.

PS Plus DLC (free for August 2026)

PlayStation Plus subscribers get a free DLC pack through September 6, 2026, including:

  • 5 avatars: Captain America, Storm,

Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Ghost Rider

  • 8 results-screen poses (2 per

character, themed per character)

  • 1 lobby theme: "Marvel Tokon:

Soul Stage"

The DLC pack is also on PC as a free download for the first month.

Post-launch content plans

Bandai Namco has committed to a Season 1 pass with 4 new characters over 6 months, plus:

  • Season 1 (Aug-Dec 2026): 4 characters

(TBA), 2 new stages, ranked season rewards

  • Season 2 (Jan-Jun 2027): 4 more

characters, 1 new game mode

  • Story expansions: "Soul Saga" story

content drops every 3 months

Why it matters

Marvel Tokon is Bandai Namco's bet that tag fighters can compete with the 2 heavy hitters (Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6) in the FGC. The 4v4 format is a clear attempt to capture the Marvel Rivals audience — players who want team-based Marvel action but in a fighting game context.

It's also a streaming-friendly format. The Marvel Snap assists, 4-character rosters, and team super moves are designed to be visually explosive for Twitch and YouTube.

The competition

  • Tekken 8: 1v1, 32-character roster,

Bandai Namco's other fighter. Released January 2024.

  • Street Fighter 6: 1v1, 22-character

roster, Capcom. Released June 2023.

  • 2XKO (Riot): 2v2 tag fighter, League

of Legends universe, still in development.

  • Guilty Gear Strive: 1v1, Arc System

Works. Released June 2021.

Marvel Tokon is the first new tag fighter since Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (2017), filling a 9-year gap.
