PEAK 'The Final Ascent' lands free Aug 11 — 95% rated indie confirms PS5 and Xbox ports in development

PEAK shipped its final free content update — "The Final Ascent" — on Aug 11, 2026. The 4-player co-op climbing roguelike from Team PEAK added two new biome variants (The Citadel and Gloom), a new climbable final peak, and a redesigned end-of-run scoring system.

PEAK is currently sitting at 95% positive reviews on Steam across 42,000+ reviews — a number that puts it in the top 5% of all Steam games. To celebrate the final update, the price dropped from $7.99 to $3.99 (50% off) through Aug 18.

What's in The Final Ascent

The Citadel

A new biome variant of the existing Alpine biome with:

  • Vertical-focused level design — the citadel is

a tall, multi-level structure that rewards experienced climbers who can chain ascension routes

  • New enemy type: the Sentinels — fast-moving

anti-climb units that patrol the citadel walls. They can knock players off ledges and force mid-route replanning

  • New item: the Lantern — emits a small area of

light that counters Gloom's dark debuffs (see below). Found in citadel supply caches

Gloom

A new biome variant of the existing Mesa biome with:

  • Permanent low-light conditions — visibility

reduced to ~30% of the standard mesa biome

  • New debuff: Dread — stacks when a player

spends time in darkness, applying -10% stamina regen per stack (max 5 stacks)

  • **New mechanic: light sources are now survival

tools**, not just cosmetic. Lanterns, flares, and campfires all reduce Dread buildup

  • New enemy: Shade Crawlers — invisible enemies

that only reveal in light. They ambush from behind

New final peak: Apex Spire

After completing both new biomes, players can attempt the Apex Spire — a single massive climb that requires coordinating all 4 team members simultaneously. The Spire is only clearable in co-op and takes 45-60 minutes for an experienced squad.

The new end-of-run scoring system rewards:

  • Vertical distance climbed (60% of score)
  • Biome completions (25% of score)
  • Team coordination events (15% of score) —

rescuing fallen teammates, sharing supplies, reviving at critical moments

Why PEAK punches above its price tag

PEAK launched on Jun 16, 2025 at $7.99 — already a budget price. The game is structurally similar to other climbing/survival games (Getting Over It, Grow Home, Only Up) but adds:

  1. 4-player co-op — the entire game is designed

for squad play, with role-based items and coordinated challenges. Solo play is possible but harder

  1. Procedural biome generation — every climb

layout is different, with hand-crafted art overlaid on random structures

  1. No violence — there's no combat. The only

"enemies" are environmental hazards (fog, cold, fall damage, poisonous plants). This makes it accessible to non-gamers and a great game to play with non-gaming friends

  1. "Just one more run" loop — runs are 30-45

minutes, easy to fit into a lunch break or a friend's visit

The 95% positive rating reflects a few things:

  • No microtransactions (all content updates

free)

  • No battle pass (no FOMO loop)
  • No PvP (no toxic players)
  • High skill ceiling (pro players can do

zero-damage runs)

Console ports confirmed

In a Q&A video released alongside the update, Team PEAK confirmed that console ports are in development:

  • PS5: targeted for Q1 2027
  • Xbox Series X/S: targeted for Q1 2027
  • Nintendo Switch 2: targeted for Q2 2027

The dev team said the port is "going well" and they are "working on it" but couldn't give a more specific release date. The Switch 2 port is the most technically challenging (the Switch 2 has less GPU power than PS5/Xbox Series S).

Why this matters for F2P gaming

PEAK is a case study in how to do indie monetization right:

  • One-time $7.99 purchase (no subscription, no

battle pass, no microtransactions)

  • All content updates free for life
  • High quality (95% positive)
  • Co-op focus (built for playing with friends)
  • No predatory mechanics (no FOMO, no loot

boxes, no pay-to-win)

Compare this to $70 AAA games with battle passes, $20 season passes, and $5 skins. PEAK delivers more value per dollar than almost any game on the market.

How to get it

  • Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/2237060
  • Price: $3.99 (50% off through Aug 18)
  • Free Final Ascent update: included for all

owners

  • Console: Q1-Q2 2027 (PS5, Xbox, Switch 2)

Is it worth $3.99?

Yes, unequivocally. At $3.99 with 30-45 minute run length and 4-player co-op, PEAK is one of the best value games of 2026. Even at full price ($7.99) it was a steal. At $3.99 it's an impulse buy.

If you have 3 friends, this is one of the best co-op games you can buy. Period.
