Sandustry launches free on Steam Aug 13 — colony sim with no monetization
Sandustry, a sci-fi colony sim with 30+ hours of content, launches free-to-play on Steam today. No battle pass, no premium currency, no microtransactions. Single-player only. Compare to RimWorld, Oxygen Not Included.

Sandustry launches free-to-play on Steam today (Aug 13, 2026). It's a single-player sci-fi colony sim with roughly 30 hours of content in the base release, and the developer (Pixel Tail Games) has committed to zero monetization — no battle pass, no premium currency, no paid DLC planned for the first year.
The hook: a single-player colony sim with no strings. The genre is dominated by RimWorld (paid, $35) and Oxygen Not Included (paid, $25), with the only free options being older or shallower. Sandustry positions itself as "RimWorld depth, free to play, no live-service nonsense."
What's in the base game
- 30+ hours of campaign content across 3 acts
- 12 playable colonist archetypes (engineer, medic,
soldier, scout, etc.)
- Procedural colony generation with 5 biomes
(desert, ice, jungle, volcanic, ocean)
- Base building with power grids, water systems,
atmospheric control, and defense networks
- Colonial management — colonist mood, relationships,
skill progression, injuries, mental breakdowns
- Alien fauna — 40+ creature types with emergent
behaviors
- 3 story factions with branching diplomacy
- Permadeath mode (optional, not default)
What it's NOT
- Not multiplayer — single-player only
- Not moddable at launch — modding support planned for
Q1 2027
- Not a roguelike — it's a colony sim, not a
rimworld-style random-generated run
- Not on console — Steam only at launch, no Switch /
PS5 / Xbox plans announced
How "free" works
Sandustry is free to download and play with the full base game included. The developer is funded by a publisher advance (publisher name not yet announced) and plans to monetize via:
- Cosmetic DLC packs (skins for colonists, base
decorations) at $5-10 each, optional
- Soundtrack + art book at $15, optional
- No gameplay-affecting purchases, ever (per
developer's public statement on Discord)
This is a rare monetization model for a free-to-play game. The closest analog is the original Path of Exile (free, no pay-to-win) but with cosmetic-only monetization from day 1.
Why this is a big deal for F2P gaming
Most free-to-play releases are multiplayer competitive games (shooters, MOBAs, battle royales) that need a player base to be fun. Single-player games going free is rare, and colony sims going free is almost unheard of in Western gaming.
If Sandustry succeeds, it could open a new category for free-to-play: premium-quality single-player experiences funded by publisher advances + cosmetic DLC. The publisher is betting that Sandustry's 30+ hours of content will build a big enough audience to make cosmetic DLC profitable.
Early reviews
The game went into Early Access on Steam on July 9 with a "Mostly Positive" rating (78% positive, 1,200+ reviews). Common praise:
- "Finally a RimWorld-like that's free"
- "The atmosphere is incredible, especially the ice
biome"
- "No predatory monetization is genuinely refreshing"
Common criticism:
- "Performance issues on lower-end hardware"
- "Tutorial is too short, first 5 hours are rough"
- "Permadeath mode is brutal, expect to lose colonies
fast"
System requirements
Minimum:
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit
- CPU: Intel i5-7400 / AMD Ryzen 5 1600
- RAM: 8 GB
- GPU: GTX 1050 / RX 560
- Storage: 12 GB
Recommended:
- CPU: Intel i5-12400 / AMD Ryzen 5 5600
- RAM: 16 GB
- GPU: GTX 1660 Super / RX 6600
- Storage: 12 GB SSD
Mac and Linux: not supported at launch. The dev says Linux Proton support is "in progress, may ship in a patch."
Worth downloading?
Yes, if you like colony sims. 30+ hours of content for free is unbeatable. The "no monetization" promise is a breath of fresh air and the game has enough depth to justify the download even if you bounce off the genre after a few hours.
Skip if: you only like multiplayer competitive games, or if you want modding support (not at launch).
