Aug 16 — the Elimination Round
The TI 2026 group stage ends on Aug 16 with the Elimination Round — 5 Bo3 matches that determine the final 5 playoff slots. After the round, 8 teams will be in the playoffs (3 directly qualified after Day 3, 5 from the Elimination Round) and 5 teams will be eliminated with the 13th-16th prize ($16K each).
This preview covers the 5 matchups, the start times, and the storylines to watch.
The 5 Elimination Round matchups
02:00 UTC — Team Falcons (3-2) vs Vici Gaming (2-3)
The de facto defending-champion elimination match. Team Falcons, the TI 2025 defending champions, are 3-2 after Day 3 and need a Bo3 win to avoid elimination. VG is 2-3 and the weakest 2-3 team on paper. Skiter's carry is the best on either roster, and Cr1t's hard support is the best in the tournament.
Falcons' path: Skiter needs to be the best carry in the game. The team's Io + Medusa combo is the strongest in the tournament. A win in game 1 puts Falcons in the driver's seat.
VG's path: Ori's mid-lane dominance. The two-time TI finalist (TI 2022, TI 2024 with BetBoom) is the best mid on either roster. The team's 2-3 record is a result of losing to stronger competition; a win over Falcons would be the upset of the day.
The series opens at 02:00 UTC.
02:00 UTC — Aurora Gaming (3-2) vs BoomBoys (2-3)
The CIS derby. Aurora (CIS) and BoomBoys (CIS, formerly BetBoom Team) are 3-2 and 2-3 respectively. The winner advances to the playoffs; the loser is eliminated. Both teams have a CIS-region identity, and the series is the most-watched match of the day in the EU and CIS broadcast regions.
Aurora's path: Nightfall needs to be the best mid in the game. The team's draft is built around his Puck/Ember Spirit comfort picks. Aurora's 3-2 record was earned by beating BoomBoys 2-0 in Round 4 — the team has the head-to-head advantage.
BoomBoys' path: gpk~'s mid is the best on BoomBoys. The team's 2-3 record is a result of losing to stronger competition in the upper bracket. A win over Aurora would be a redemption arc for the team that rebranded from BetBoom Team for TI 2026.
The series opens at 02:00 UTC (parallel with Falcons vs VG).
05:00 UTC — Team Spirit (3-2) vs Team Resilience (2-3)
The 2-time-TI-champion team vs the open-qualifier team. Spirit (the 2-time TI champion, TI 2021 and TI 2023) is 3-2 after a 0-2 loss to Nigma Galaxy on Day 3. Resilience (the Chinese open-qualifier team) is 2-3 after a 2-0 win over Xtreme Gaming on Day 3.
Spirit's path: Yatoro needs to be the best carry in the game. The two-time TI champion is the most experienced player in the elimination round. The team's 3-2 record was earned by going 3-0 to start, then losing 2 straight.
Resilience's path: zzq's carry and planet's mid are above average for a 2-3 team. The team's 2-0 win over Xtreme Gaming in Round 5 was the best performance of the team's tournament. A win over Spirit would be a major upset.
The series opens at 05:00 UTC.
05:00 UTC — Iron Wing (3-2) vs GamerLegion (2-3)
The ex-Tundra roster vs the NA qualifier. Iron Wing (the ex-Tundra Esports roster of Pure, bzm, 33, Ari, Whitemon, playing under the broadcast tag) is 3-2 after a 2-1 win over Team Yandex on Day 3. GamerLegion (the NA qualifier) is 2-3 after a 2-0 win over OG on Day 3.
Iron Wing's path: 33's hero pool is the deepest in the tournament. The two-time TI champion is the best mid on either roster. The team's 3-2 record was earned by beating Nigma Galaxy 2-0 in Round 1, Team Falcons 2-1 in Round 3, and Team Yandex 2-1 in Round 5.
GamerLegion's path: Ghost's carry is the best NA carry in the tournament. The team's 2-3 record was earned by beating VG 2-1 in Round 3, losing to Falcons 1-2 in Round 4, and beating OG 2-0 in Round 5.
The series opens at 05:00 UTC (parallel with Spirit vs Resilience).
08:00 UTC — LGD Gaming (3-2) vs Team Yandex (2-3)
The open-qualifier Cinderella vs the CIS qualifier. LGD (the South American open-qualifier team with Topson) is 3-2 after a 2-0 win over VG on Day 3. Yandex (the CIS open-qualifier team) is 2-3 after a 1-2 loss to Iron Wing on Day 3.
LGD's path: Topson's hero pool is the most decorated of any mid in the elimination round. The two-time TI champion (TI 2018, TI 2019 with OG) joined LGD mid-tournament as a substitute. The team's 3-2 record was earned by going 3-2 with a Round 4 win over Xtreme Gaming and a Round 5 win over VG.
Yandex' path: watson's mid is the team's best player. The 2-3 record was earned by beating HULIGANI 2-0 in Round 1 and losing to Iron Wing 0-2 in Round 1, Aurora 1-2 in Round 3, Team Resilience 1-2 in Round 4, and Iron Wing 1-2 in Round 5.
The series opens at 08:00 UTC.
Storylines to watch
1. The CIS region's playoff chances. 5 of the 10 Elimination Round teams have CIS-region ties: Aurora, Team Spirit, Team Falcons, BoomBoys, and Team Yandex. (LGD is officially registered as South American; the open-qualifier team's "LGD" tag is the Chinese LGD brand licensing the slot.) If 3 or more CIS teams qualify for the playoffs, it would be the largest CIS representation in a TI main event since 2018.
2. The Iron Wing redemption arc. Iron Wing (ex-Tundra Esports) is in the elimination round despite a strong Day 1 2-0 over HULIGANI. The team's 3-2 record is the best of any 3-2 team on paper. A win over GamerLegion would put 33 (the two-time TI champion) in the upper bracket of the playoffs.
3. The Falcons' survival test. Defending TI 2025 champions Team Falcons are 3-2 and need a win over Vici Gaming to avoid elimination. The team was the consensus pre-event favorite. A loss to VG on Aug 16 would be the first time Falcons miss the TI playoffs since 2022 — and the first major tournament elimination for the team under the Falcons brand.
4. The Topson factor. LGD's mid is the two-time TI champion (TI 2018, TI 2019 with OG). The mid-season substitution of Topson for TaiLung was the catalyst for LGD's 3-2 finish. A win over Yandex on Aug 16 would put Topson in the TI 2026 playoffs — the only player to make 7 consecutive TIs.
The Elimination Round format
The 5 matches are single-elimination. Winners advance to the playoffs (Aug 20-23); losers are eliminated with the 13th-16th prize ($16K each). All matches are Bo3. The schedule is the same as a normal Swiss round, with matches at 02:00, 05:00, and 08:00 UTC.
What's at stake
By the end of Aug 16:
- 8 teams will be in the TI 2026 playoffs (3 direct + 5 from elimination)
- 5 teams will be eliminated (HULIGANI, OG, Xtreme Gaming are already out; 2 more after elimination)
The next article in this series will be the Aug 16 Elimination recap, followed by the playoff preview on Aug 19.
