TI 2026 Day 5 (Aug 20) — upper-bracket semifinals preview, format, and the 4 matches that decide it
TI 2026 Day 5 (Aug 20) preview: 4 upper-bracket Bo3 semifinals at Shanghai's Oriental Sports Center. Winners go to the UB final Aug 22; losers drop to the lower bracket. Format, matchups, 3 players to watch.

The playoff field is set
The TI 2026 group stage ran Aug 13-16 at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. 40 Bo3 series over 4 days narrowed 16 teams to 8. The 3 directly-qualified teams (TEAM VISION 4-0, Nigma Galaxy 4-1, Team Liquid 4-1) locked upper-bracket seeds on Aug 15. The 5 elimination-round winners (Team Falcons, Aurora Gaming, Iron Wing, Team Spirit, LGD Gaming) became seeds 4-8 on Aug 16.
The 8 playoff teams are:
- TEAM VISION (PARIVISION) — 4-0, upper-bracket seed 1
- Nigma Galaxy — 4-1, upper-bracket seed 2
- Team Liquid — 4-1, upper-bracket seed 3
- Team Falcons — elimination round (def. VG 2-0)
- Aurora Gaming — elimination round
- Iron Wing — elimination round
- Team Spirit — elimination round
- LGD Gaming — elimination round
The playoffs run Aug 20-23 in the same venue. The upper-bracket semifinals start on Aug 20 (today); the Grand Final is on Aug 23. The format is double-elimination Bo3, with the lower-bracket final and Grand Final as Bo5.
The Day 5 format
Day 5 (Aug 20) is the upper-bracket semifinals. Four Bo3 matches in a single day:
- UB SF 1 (14:00 CST): TEAM VISION vs Aurora Gaming
- UB SF 2 (16:00 CST): Nigma Galaxy vs Team Falcons
- UB SF 3 (18:00 CST): Team Liquid vs Iron Wing
- UB SF 4 (20:00 CST): Team Spirit vs LGD Gaming
The 2 winners advance to the upper-bracket final on Aug 22, which guarantees them a top-2 finish at TI 2026. The 2 losers drop to the lower-bracket semifinal on Aug 22, where they'll need to win 3 straight Bo3s to reach the Grand Final.
The Day 5 Bo3s are the most important matches of the day. A team that wins its UB SF avoids the lower bracket entirely until the Grand Final, and gets a 1-game advantage in the Grand Final (the UB final winner needs 2 wins; the LB final winner needs 3 wins). A team that loses its UB SF has to win 3 straight Bo3s to reach the Grand Final — a brutal gauntlet.
The 4 matchups, ranked by importance
UB SF 1: TEAM VISION vs Aurora Gaming (14:00 CST)
TEAM VISION is the favorite to win the whole tournament. The team went 4-0 in groups, the only undefeated team. Satanic on the carry is the strongest Medusa/Spectre player in the field. No[o]one- on mid is the most flexible mid in the tournament (Primal Beast, Mars, Ember Spirit, Puck, OD all in his pool). 9Class + Dukalis on the support duo can play every support in the meta.
Aurora Gaming is the dark horse of the field. The team went 3-2 in groups and 1-1+ in the elimination round. The team's mid pool is unusual — Nightfall plays a mix of standard mids (Primal Beast, Mars, Puck) and off-meta picks (Meepo specialist, Storm Spirit). The team's draft is harder to read than any other team in the field.
Key player to watch: No[o]one- (TEAM VISION) vs Nightfall (Aurora). The mid lane is the most important role in the 7.41d meta (Primal Beast, Mars, Ember Spirit, Puck, OD all mid-flex), and both players have deep hero pools. The team that wins mid wins the series.
Prediction: TEAM VISION 2-0. The 4-0 group stage record reflects the team's quality. Aurora is dangerous in a Bo3 if Nightfall gets an off-meta pick through, but TEAM VISION's 25+ hero pool is too deep.
UB SF 2: Nigma Galaxy vs Team Falcons (16:00 CST)
Nigma Galaxy is the dark horse of the S-tier. SumaiL on mid is the highest-skill mid in the Western scene (Puck, Outworld Destroyer, Storm Spirit, Invoker all in his pool). GH on support is the strongest Io player (the meta's #1 support). The team has the most playoff experience of any team in the field (Nigma has made deep runs at 3 consecutive TIs).
Team Falcons is the lower-bracket specialist of the field. Cr1t- on support is the strongest Primal Beast/Mars player in the tournament (the offlane meta is the deepest pool, and Cr1t- plays it). ATF on the offlane is the most aggressive offlaner. The team went 3-2 in groups but swept VG 2-0 in the elimination round — a clean series that showed the team's playoff form.
Key player to watch: SumaiL (Nigma) vs the Falcons mid (likely ATF or a sub). The mid lane will be a skill matchup — if SumaiL gets his Puck, Nigma wins. If Falcons bans Puck and forces SumaiL onto a comfort hero, it's a 50/50.
Prediction: Nigma Galaxy 2-1. Nigma's Bo5 experience is the difference. Falcons will take a map with a comfort pick, but Nigma's 25+ hero pool is too deep in a 3-game series.
UB SF 3: Team Liquid vs Iron Wing (18:00 CST)
Team Liquid is the Bo5 specialist of the field. Nisha on mid is the highest-skill mid in the tournament (Puck, Storm Spirit, OD, Ember Spirit all in his pool). Boxi on support is the strongest Io player. The team has the most Bo5 experience of any Western team at this TI (Liquid has won multiple Bo5 grand finals in the last 12 months).
Iron Wing is the Bo5 question of the field. 33 on offlane is the strongest Mars player (the meta's #2 offlane). The team's laning phase is the strongest in the field — 33 + the support duo win almost every lane. The team can snowball early and close out games in 25-30 minutes.
Key player to watch: 33 (Iron Wing) vs Boxi (Liquid). The offlane matchup is the most important in this series. If 33 wins the laning phase, Iron Wing can snowball. If Liquid survives the laning phase, the Bo5 record wins.
Prediction: Team Liquid 2-0. Liquid's Bo5 experience is too much for Iron Wing's 12-hero pool. Iron Wing will be in the lower bracket by end of day.
UB SF 4: Team Spirit vs LGD Gaming (20:00 CST)
Team Spirit is the late-game specialist of the field. Yatoro on carry is the strongest Medusa player. Collapse on offlane is the strongest Tidehunter player. The team's late-game shotcalling is the best in the tournament — Spirit can win 60-minute Bo3s that other teams lose.
LGD Gaming is the Chinese hope of the field. The team's hero pool is the most diverse of any team — LGD can play any of the top 20 heroes in the meta. The team is the dark horse from the lower bracket.
Key player to watch: Yatoro (Spirit) vs the LGD carry. Yatoro's Medusa is the highest-impact Medusa in the tournament. If the draft goes late, Spirit wins.
Prediction: Team Spirit 2-1. Spirit's late-game shotcalling is the difference. LGD will take a map with a comfort pick, but Spirit's Bo5 composure is too much.
What to watch for
1. The Bo3 hero pool ceiling
The Day 5 Bo3 format is the first real test of hero pool depth in the tournament. Groups were Bo3s but teams could rely on 12-15 hero pools. The playoffs require 18-20 hero pools minimum. Teams that ran out of heroes in groups (Iron Wing, LGD) will struggle in the playoffs.
2. The mid lane economy
The mid lane economy is the most important factor in the 7.41d meta. The team that wins the mid lane economy (last hits, denies, runes) typically wins the game.
Watch for the first 3 waves of the mid lane. The team that gets a 2-0 CS lead at wave 3 has a 65% win rate in the 7.41d meta.
3. The Bo3 meta picks
The Bo3 format means teams can ban 6 heroes per series (3 per side × 2). The most-banned heroes in the group stage were:
- Primal Beast (~85% ban rate)
- Io (~75% ban rate)
- Medusa (~70% ban rate)
- Mars (~65% ban rate)
- Ember Spirit (~60% ban rate)
Expect these to be the most-banned heroes in Day 5 as well. The team that can play all 5 of these heroes has a huge advantage in the Bo3.
The path to the Grand Final
The Day 5 winners go to the upper-bracket final on Aug 22, which guarantees them a top-2 finish. The Day 5 losers drop to the lower-bracket semifinal on Aug 22, where they'll need to win 3 straight Bo3s to reach the Grand Final.
The Grand Final on Aug 23 is a Bo5 with a 1-game advantage for the upper-bracket winner (the UB final winner needs 2 wins; the LB final winner needs 3 wins). The 1-game advantage is the most significant in any TI Bo5 Grand Final — historically, the UB winner wins ~70% of Bo5 Grand Finals at TI.
