Day 5 recap: the UB SF is over

The TI 2026 upper-bracket semifinals ran on Aug 20 at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. 4 Bo3 series narrowed the UB field from 4 to 2. The 2 winners advance to the upper-bracket final on Aug 22, the 2 losers drop to Day 6 (Aug 21) lower-bracket Round 1.

Day 6 (Aug 21) — Lower Bracket Round 1

Day 6 is the start of the lower-bracket gauntlet. The 4 Day 5 UB SF losers face off in 2 Bo3s. The 2 winners go to Day 7 (Aug 22) LB semifinals alongside the 2 Day 5 UB SF losers that don't play Day 6 (the UB SF 1 and UB SF 4 losers, who had to wait for the LB R1 winners).

The format is double-elimination Bo3, with the lower-bracket final and Grand Final as Bo5. A team that loses on Day 6 is eliminated (and finishes 5th-6th, with the corresponding prize money).

The 2 Day 6 matchups

LB R1 1: Nigma Galaxy vs Aurora Gaming (14:00 CST)

The UB SF 2 loser (Nigma Galaxy) faces the UB SF 1 loser (Aurora Gaming) in the most-anticipated Day 6 match. Both teams went 4-1 in the group stage and were S-tier favorites; the loser of this series is a top-3 pre-event favorite going home in 5th-6th.

Why Nigma is dangerous: SumaiL on mid is the highest-skill mid in the Western scene (Puck, OD, Storm Spirit, Invoker all in his pool). GH on support is the strongest Io player (the meta's #1 support). The team has 3 consecutive deep TI runs.

Why Aurora is dangerous: Nightfall's mid pool is the most-unpredictable in the tournament. Standard mids (Primal Beast, Mars, Puck) plus off-meta picks (Meepo specialist, Storm Spirit) give Aurora a draft edge no other team has.

Key player to watch: SumaiL (Nigma) vs Nightfall (Aurora). The mid lane is the most-important role in the 7.41d meta, and both players have deep hero pools. The team that wins mid wins the series.

Prediction: Nigma Galaxy 2-1. SumaiL's Bo5 experience (Nigma has made deep runs at 3 consecutive TIs) is the difference. Aurora will take a map with an off-meta pick, but Nigma's 25+ hero pool is too deep in a 3-game series.

LB R1 2: Team Spirit vs Team Liquid (18:00 CST)

The UB SF 4 loser (Team Spirit) faces the UB SF 3 loser (Team Liquid) in the second Day 6 match. Spirit went 4-1 in groups; Liquid went 4-1 in groups and was a top-3 favorite to win the whole tournament.

Why Spirit is dangerous: Yatoro on carry is the strongest Medusa player. Collapse on offlane is the strongest Tidehunter player. The team's late-game shotcalling is the best in the tournament — Spirit can win 60-minute Bo3s that other teams lose.

Why Liquid is dangerous: Nisha on mid is the highest-skill mid in the tournament (Puck, Storm Spirit, OD, Ember Spirit all in his pool). Boxi on support is the strongest Io player. The team has the most Bo5 experience of any Western team at this TI (Liquid has won multiple Bo5 grand finals in the last 12 months).

Key player to watch: Nisha (Liquid) vs Yatoro (Spirit). The mid-vs-carry matchup is the most-important in the 7.41d meta. If Nisha wins mid, Liquid wins the series. If Yatoro gets a free farming game, Spirit's late-game shotcalling wins.

Prediction: Team Liquid 2-0. Nisha's mid pool is the deepest in the field (4 strong picks vs Yatoro's 1-2 comfort heroes). Liquid's Bo5 experience is too much for Spirit's 12-hero pool.

The path to the Grand Final

The Day 6 winners go to the LB semifinals on Aug 22, alongside the 2 Day 5 UB SF winners that didn't play Day 6. The LB semifinals are 2 Bo3s; the winners go to the LB final on Aug 23 (a Bo5). The LB final winner plays the UB final winner from Aug 22 in the Grand Final on Aug 23 (also a Bo5, with a 1-game advantage for the UB winner).

A team that wins on Day 6 needs 3 straight Bo3s (Day 7 LB SF, Day 8 LB final, Day 8 Grand Final prep) plus 1 Bo5 (Day 8 Grand Final) to win the whole tournament. That's the most-grueling path in any TI format.

What to watch for

1. The mid lane meta

The 7.41d meta favors 5 mid heroes — Primal Beast, Mars, Ember Spirit, Puck, OD. Every team that can play all 5 has a huge advantage. Nigma and Liquid are the only two teams in Day 6 with that depth.

2. The Bo3 hero pool ceiling

Day 6 is the first real test of hero pool depth in the playoffs. Groups were Bo3s but teams could rely on 12-15 hero pools. The playoffs require 18-20 hero pools minimum. Teams that ran out of heroes in groups will struggle in the LB.

3. The crowd

The Oriental Sports Center is sold out for every day of the TI 2026 playoffs. The Aug 21 Day 6 crowd is expected to be the largest of the tournament — China is the home region for several teams (LGD, Xtreme Gaming) and Chinese fans are turning out in force.
