Sandustry review — the free-to-play colony sim that doesn't nickel-and-dime you
Sandustry launches free on Steam with 30+ hours of content, no microtransactions, and a rare publisher- advance monetization model. 20+ hours of playtesting. Score: 8/10, must-play for the genre.

Sandustry launched free-to-play on Steam on Aug 13,
- We played it for 20+ hours to see if a premium
single-player colony sim can work as a free game. The short answer: yes, with caveats.
The game is a sci-fi colony sim with 30+ hours of campaign content, 12 colonist archetypes, 5 biomes (desert, ice, jungle, volcanic, ocean), and 3 story factions with branching diplomacy. The hook is RimWorld-style depth, free to play, no live-service nonsense.
What's great
Atmospheric world design: The ice biome is the best in the genre. Snowstorms that force you to reinforce your base, blizzards that damage exposed colonists, frozen lakes that need thawing before you can build — the biome is mechanically distinct from the others and rewards different playstyles. The volcanic biome is also strong, with lava flows that can destroy your base if you build too close. The desert biome is the weakest — it's mechanically similar to the ice biome but with heat instead of cold, and the visual design is less compelling.
Colonist progression: The 12 archetypes (engineer, medic, soldier, scout, etc.) are not just stat differences. Each archetype has a unique skill tree with 15-20 perks that significantly change how they play. The engineer can build advanced turrets and traps, the medic can perform battlefield surgery that revives downed colonists faster, the scout can mark enemy positions for the whole team. The progression system is more nuanced than RimWorld's.
No predatory monetization: This is the rarest thing in F2P gaming. Sandustry has no premium currency, no battle pass, no pay-to-win mechanics. The only monetization is optional cosmetic DLC (skin packs, $5-10 each) and a soundtrack + art book bundle ($15). The developer (Pixel Tail Games) has publicly committed to keeping gameplay 100% free forever.
Story factions: The 3 story factions (the Terran Remnant, the Hive, the Drifters) each have a 10+ hour questline with branching diplomacy. You can ally with all three (peaceful but resource-constrained), betray one to ally with the others (faster progression, more conflict), or play as a lone wolf (hardest, most rewarding). The story isn't as deep as RimWorld's AI Storyteller, but the diplomatic choices feel meaningful.
What's not great
Performance issues on lower-end hardware: Sandustry is more demanding than RimWorld. On a GTX 1050 / i5-7400 (the minimum specs), the game runs at 30-40 FPS in the ice biome during snowstorms. That's playable but not smooth. On the recommended specs (GTX 1660 Super / i5-12400), the game runs at 60 FPS in all biomes.
Tutorial is too short: The in-game tutorial covers the basics (build a base, manage colonists, defend from threats) but doesn't cover advanced systems (perk synergies, faction diplomacy, terraforming). The first 5 hours are rough because you're learning by trial and error. The Steam community has a comprehensive guide that fills the gaps, but a better in-game tutorial would have been welcome.
Permadeath mode is brutal: The optional permadeath mode (where colonists die permanently) is harder than RimWorld's. The early-game threats (raider attacks, disease, environmental damage) can wipe a colony in 10 in-game days if you're unprepared. Expect to lose 3-5 colonies before you get the hang of the difficulty curve.
Modding support not at launch: Modding is planned for Q1 2027, but at launch there's no way to add custom scenarios, balance changes, or visual mods. The game is robust enough that this isn't a deal-breaker, but RimWorld's modding community is a major reason for its longevity.
Comparison to RimWorld and Oxygen Not Included
| Sandustry | RimWorld | Oxygen Not Included | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | $35 | $25 |
| Content hours | 30+ | 100+ | 50+ |
| Difficulty | High | Very high | Very high |
| Modding | Q1 2027 | Excellent | Good |
| Story | 3 factions | AI Storyteller | Cycle-based |
| Art style | 2D pixel art | 2D | 2D + 3D |
| Performance | 30-60 FPS | 60+ FPS | 30-60 FPS |
Sandustry is closer to RimWorld than to ONI in terms of gameplay loop (managing a colony of named characters through random events). It's not as deep as RimWorld (no modding, no AI Storyteller) but it's free and 80% as good.
Is the monetization model sustainable?
This is the big question. Sandustry is funded by a publisher advance (publisher name not yet announced). The advance is a lump sum the publisher pays the developer upfront, in exchange for a cut of future revenue. The developer needs to earn out the advance before seeing any profit.
Realistic math: If the publisher advanced $500K (a reasonable guess for a game of this scope), the developer needs to earn $1M+ in revenue (50/50 split) to break even. With cosmetic DLC at $5-10 each, they need to sell 100K-200K DLC packs. That's achievable if the game gets 500K+ players.
Risk: If the player count is too low, the developer can't earn out the advance and the publisher cuts funding. The game would still remain free, but future updates would slow down.
The most likely outcome is that Sandustry gets a critical mass of players (the free-to-play pricing is a strong hook), the developer earns out the advance within 12-18 months, and the game continues to receive content updates.
Verdict: must-play if you like the genre
Sandustry is the best free-to-play colony sim available. It's not as deep as RimWorld, but it's free, has 30+ hours of content, and doesn't nickel-and-dime you with microtransactions. If you're a fan of the genre, download it now.
Score: 8/10. Must-play if you like colony sims. Skip if you only like multiplayer competitive games.
