CS2's map pool in 2026 includes 9 active duty maps (the ones in competitive and premier rotation) plus reserves and community maps. The active duty pool rotates regularly, with one map typically removed and one added per major update.

This list ranks 11 CS2 maps S→F based on competitive balance, layout quality, and pro play frequency. The "best" map is the one that's most fair, most fun, and most played at the highest level.

Methodology

I ranked these on five criteria, weighted equally:

  1. Competitive balance — Is the

map 50/50 between CT and T side?

  1. Layout quality — Is the map

well-designed with good sight lines and chokepoints?

  1. Pro play frequency — How often

is the map played at the major tournament level?

  1. Casual fun — Is the map fun to

play in casual modes?

  1. Strategic depth — Does the map

reward strategic variety (A-site exec vs. B-site exec, etc.)?

I deliberately excluded:

  • Workshop maps (community-created)
  • Defusal Group Sigma/Delta maps

(scrim only)

  • Maps removed from active duty

(Office, Italy, etc.)

S-Tier: Map-defining

Mirage

Mirage is the most-played CS2 map at every level — casual, ranked, premier, pro. The layout is well-balanced (good CT/T balance, 3 bombsites, clear chokepoints). The reason it's S-tier: it's the perfect CS map. ~20% of pro matches played on Mirage.

Inferno

Inferno is the most-popular map at the pro level. The layout is the most strategic (tight chokepoints, multiple routes, complex utility usage). The reason it's S-tier: the depth of strategy at the pro level is unmatched. ~25% of pro matches played on Inferno.

A-Tier: Excellent

Dust 2

Dust 2 is the original CS map and still one of the most-popular. The layout is the simplest of the A-tier maps (long sight lines, clear chokes). The reason it's A-tier, not S-tier: it's too simple and the meta is too established. ~15% of pro matches.

Nuke

Nuke is the most-unique map in the pool. The vertical layout (above and below ground) is unique and rewarding. The reason it's A-tier: the new Nuke rework in 2024 fixed most balance issues. ~12% of pro matches.

Anubis

Anubis is the newest map in the active duty pool. The Egyptian theme is visually distinct and the layout is well-balanced. The reason it's A-tier: the meta is still developing. ~10% of pro matches.

B-Tier: Solid

Ancient

Ancient is a solid map with a Mayan theme. The layout is balanced but the design is somewhat forgettable. The reason it's B-tier: it's the "no strong opinions" map. ~8% of pro matches.

Train

Train returned to the active duty pool in 2024 after a 5-year absence. The rework fixed many of the original design issues. The reason it's B-tier: the meta is still being figured out. ~7% of pro matches.

Vertigo

Vertigo is the most-polarizing map in the pool. The vertical layout is unique but the design is divisive. The reason it's B-tier: the balance is hard to get right and many pros don't like it. ~5% of pro matches.

C-Tier: Cult

Cache

Cache was a fan-favorite active duty map before being removed in 2019. The community has been begging for its return. The reason it's C-tier: the layout is solid but dated. ~3% of pro matches (when active).

Cobblestone

Cobblestone was the most-controversial active duty map before being removed in 2018. The layout is iconic but the B-site was always broken. The reason it's C-tier: the cult following outweighs the design quality.

D-Tier: Returning

Overpass

Overpass returned to the active duty pool in 2024 after a multi-year absence. The rework fixed many issues but the map still has notable balance problems. The reason it's D-tier: the rework is incomplete. ~5% of pro matches.

F-Tier: Worst

Agency

Agency was a co-op map from CS:GO that was briefly added to competitive. The reason it's F-tier: it was never designed for 5v5 competitive play.

Vertigo (original)

The original Vertigo was the worst- designed active duty map. The reason it's F-tier: the layout was terrible and the rework only partially fixed it.

How to pick the right CS2 map for you

If you want the most-balanced map: Mirage or Inferno.

If you want the most-strategic depth: Inferno or Nuke.

If you want the simplest layout: Dust 2 or Anubis.

If you want the most-unique layout: Nuke (vertical) or Vertigo (vertical).

Controversial takes

Mirage is the best CS map ever made. No other map has the perfect balance of simplicity, strategy, and fun. It's the only map that's universally loved at every level.

Inferno is the most-strategic map. The combination of tight chokepoints, multiple routes, and complex utility usage rewards the deepest strategy in any CS map.

Vertigo is overrated. The vertical layout is unique but the design is divisive and many pros hate it. It should be a reserve map, not active duty.

Cache and Cobblestone should return. Both have cult followings and the reworks would fix the design issues. The community has been begging for years.

How to pick the right CS2 map for you

The map pool rotates regularly, so learning every map is essential. But some maps are more important to learn first. Here's the decision tree we use to recommend maps to new players.

If you're new to CS2: Start with Dust 2. The layout is the simplest — long sight lines, clear chokepoints, no vertical layers. You'll learn the basics of the game without map complexity getting in the way.

If you want the most-balanced map experience: Mirage. The layout is well-balanced (good CT/T, 3 bombsites, clear chokepoints) and the community is huge. You'll find games fast and the meta is well-established.

If you want the most-strategic experience: Inferno. The layout is the most strategic (tight chokepoints, multiple routes, complex utility usage). It rewards the deepest strategic play of any CS map.

If you want the most-unique experience: Nuke. The vertical layout (above and below ground) is unique and rewarding. The rework in 2024 fixed most balance issues.

If you want to learn smokes and utility usage: Inferno or Anubis. Both reward complex utility usage.

If you want to learn rotations: Mirage or Dust 2. Both have clear rotation paths that are easy to learn.

If you want the most-forgiving map: Dust 2 or Anubis. Both have forgiving chokepoints and layouts.

Controversial takes

Mirage is the best CS map ever made. No other map has the perfect balance of simplicity, strategy, and fun. It's the only map that's universally loved at every level — casual, ranked, premier, pro.

Inferno is the most-strategic map. The combination of tight chokepoints, multiple routes, and complex utility usage rewards the deepest strategy in any CS map. The pro meta is the most developed of any map.

Vertigo is overrated. The vertical layout is unique but the design is divisive and many pros hate it. It should be a reserve map, not active duty. The recent rework only partially fixed the design issues.

Cache and Cobblestone should return. Both have cult followings and the reworks would fix the design issues. Cache is the most-requested map by the community. Cobblestone has the iconic layout that pros remember.

Anubis is the best new map. The Egyptian theme is visually distinct and the layout is well-balanced. The meta is still developing but the foundation is solid.

Overpass needs more work. The rework fixed some issues but the map still has notable balance problems. The CT side is too strong on most bombsites.

Train is overrated. The rework is good but the map is still less popular than the original. The community hasn't fully embraced it.

How to pick the right CS2 map for your playstyle

Your preferred playstyle should determine your preferred map. Aggressive players prefer tight chokepoints; passive players prefer long sight lines. Here's the decision tree we use to recommend maps to readers.

If you're an aggressive T-side player: Inferno and Nuke are the best. Both reward aggressive utility usage and fast executes. The tight chokepoints in Inferno favor teams that can throw coordinated executes. The vertical layout of Nuke rewards aggressive upper-play.

If you're a passive CT-side player: Dust 2 and Mirage are the best. Both reward patient CT-side play with long sight lines and clear chokepoints. The utility usage is straightforward and the meta is well-established.

If you like info-gathering: Nuke and Anubis. Both reward players who gather and use info effectively. The vertical layout of Nuke means info is critical. The Egyptian theme of Anubis rewards map knowledge.

If you like AWPer positions: Dust 2 and Mirage. Both have iconic AWP positions (Dust 2 long A, Mirage window) that are fun to hold and fun to play around.

If you like entry fragging: Inferno and Ancient. Both reward aggressive entry with multiple angles to clear.

If you like lurker play: Mirage and Nuke. Both have multiple rotation paths that reward smart lurkers.

Controversial takes

Anubis is the best-designed new map. The Egyptian theme is visually distinct and the layout is well-balanced. The community has embraced it faster than any new map in recent years.

Vertigo should be removed from active duty. The vertical layout is divisive and many pros hate it. Reserve maps like Cache and Cobblestone are more popular than Vertigo.

Train is overrated. The rework is good but the map is still less popular than the original. The community hasn't fully embraced it.

Overpass needs more work. The rework fixed some issues but the map still has notable balance problems. The CT side is too strong on most bombsites.

Ancient is the most-forgotten A-tier map. The Mayan theme is unique but the design is somewhat forgettable. No one has strong opinions about Ancient.

Cache is the most-requested return. The community has been begging for Cache since 2019. The workshop version is popular but the official return would be huge.
