WoW Patch 12.1 launches today, Midnight Season 2 starts August 18
WoW Patch 12.1 goes live today (Aug 11, 2026), opening the Midnight prelude. Season 2 (raid, M+ pool, PvP) unlocks Aug 18. Plus the catch-up event ends today — last day to claim the rewards.

Blizzard launches World of Warcraft Patch 12.1 today (Aug 11, 2026), the prelude to the Midnight expansion's Season 2. The competitive seasonal content unlocks one week later on August 18.
Patch 12.1 — what's in the build
The 12.1 patch is the structural setup for Season 2. It includes:
- New baseline systems: updated talent trees, the
consolidated currency system (replaces the old Valor/Justice split), and the new Delves difficulty tiers (Delver's Journey, Delve Master)
- Initial campaign chapters: 3 new story chapters
opening the Midnight epilogue (post-Nighthold narrative, the Void Elf and Lightforged resolution arc)
- New world content: the Zaralek Cavern daily
zone opens to all players, with the Black Dragonflight Assault weekly event (replaces the older World Boss content)
- Class balance pass: every spec has been adjusted at
least 5% from the Season 1 tuning — the goal is to invalidate the dominant S1 meta comps
- Two new raids teased: 12.1 unlocks the **"Sanctum of
the All-Seeing"** as a preview dungeon (not a full raid); the actual 12.1 raid tier lands with Season 2 on Aug 18
Patch 12.1 is a large content patch but not an expansion — no level cap increase, no new continent. The level cap stays at 90 (Midnight's launch cap).
Season 2 — Aug 18 launch
One week after 12.1, the competitive seasonal content unlocks at the standard Blizzard cadence:
- New raid tier: "The Voidspire" (12 bosses) — the
final raid of the Midnight expansion, closing the Void Elf story arc. Normal/Heroic/Mythic difficulties open Aug 18; the Race to World First runs the same weekend
- Mythic+ season 2 pool: 8 dungeons, including 2
refreshed from previous seasons and 1 new dungeon ("The Nexus Vault")
- New PvP season: 2v2 ranked ladder, 3v3 rated
battlegrounds, and the new Solo Shuffle competitive queue (added in 11.0, now expanded)
- New seasonal affix: "Void-Touched" — all enemies
spawn with a stacking shadow damage shield that explodes on death (encourages AoE clear)
- Great Vault reset: 1-week lockouts refresh on Aug 18,
item level cap raises by 13 ilvls
- PvP conquest cap refreshes: full 2400 conquest cap
available Aug 18, weekly elite gear unlocks
The catch-up event ends today (Aug 11)
The "Heroes of Azeroth" catch-up event runs from June 30 to August 11, 2026 — today is the last day. The event gives:
- Free Renown catch-up: alts get 20 levels of Renown
on first login during the event window
- Double reputation from all Dragon Isles and Midnight
activities
- Free mount (the Vulpine Familiar) for any player
who logs in at least once during the event
- Free transmog set (the "Heroes' Regalia") for
reaching Renown 30 on one character
Players who haven't logged in since June 30 still have until 11:59 PM PDT today to claim the mount and transmog.
The new raid — "The Voidspire"
The Voidspire is a 12-boss raid set inside a Void Elf fortress. Notable bosses:
- Voidlord Ethereon (first boss, gatekeeper)
- The All-Seeing (final boss, the antagonist revealed
in the Midnight campaign)
- L'ura (secret boss, drops the Void-Touched Drake
mount)
- Rest tier: the "Sanctum Hub" (a Void Elf-themed
rest area with the new seasonal vendor)
The raid has 4 difficulty modes: LFR (Looking for Raid, open 1 week later), Normal, Heroic, and Mythic. Mythic unlocks on Aug 25, one week after Heroic.
Mythic+ season 2 dungeon pool
The 8-dungeon pool:
- The Nexus Vault (new)
- Ara-Kara, City of Echoes (revamped)
- The Dawnbreaker (revamped)
- City of Threads (carried over from S1)
- Mists of Tirna Scithe (carried over)
- Siege of Boralus (carried over)
- The Stonevault (carried over)
- Grim Batol (carried over)
The affix rotation for the season is: Tyrannical → Fortified → Tyrannical → Fortified for the first 4 weeks, then a "tormented" finale affix for the last 2 weeks.
Why it matters
Patch 12.1 + Season 2 is the last major WoW content drop of 2026 before the next expansion cycle starts. After Aug 18, the next major WoW release is the 2027 expansion (unannounced, but the "Worldsoul Saga" trilogy's final chapter).
For players, the patch + season 2 launch is the best time to start or return — the catch-up event closes today, Mythic+ rating is at its lowest, and the new raid race starts fresh.
FAQ
