Marvel Tokon PC patch Aug 10 fixes the performance issues — what changed
Arc System Works shipped a major Marvel Tokon PC patch on Aug 10. The 10GB update reduced CPU load, fixed performance drops, and addressed frame rate issues. Steam review-bombing is starting to lift, but matchmaking times are still long.

Arc System Works shipped the first major Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls PC patch on August 10, 2026, the same patch the studio promised would address the launch-day performance issues that caused the Steam review-bombing. The update is 10GB and includes the fixes detailed below.
What's in the patch
Reduced CPU usage
The headline fix. The patch addresses two specific issues that were driving high CPU usage:
- Startup CPU spike — the game was running high CPU
throughout the start-up process, even on systems that should have handled the load easily. The patch reduces the initial CPU load during start-up
- Audio processing — the game was running periodic audio
processing during matches, creating additional CPU load. The patch moves the audio processing to a single pass per frame instead of multiple per-frame calls
Sudden performance drops
The patch identifies and fixes a specific issue: the game was regularly checking for available audio inputs during gameplay. Each check could trigger a sudden frame drop or performance spike. The fix disables the unnecessary checks after the initial audio setup.
Frame rate drops
The patch fixes an issue where the frame rate would drop when certain resolutions were selected. This was particularly noticeable on ultrawide monitors (3440x1440, 3840x1080) where the frame rate would drop by 30-40% from the same hardware at 16:9 resolutions.
Bug fixes
- Battle Settings: fixed an issue where restarting the game
with certain customization items or colors enabled would cause the settings to revert to default
- Online Lobby: fixed an issue where changing how attack
buttons were displayed to action icons resulted in some buttons becoming unresponsive during the open lobby mini games
- Mouse: fixed an issue where the game would sometimes
crash when using the mouse too quickly in the game's menus
PC-specific improvements
- Shader warm-up: the game now prompts you to warm up the
shaders on first launch after the patch. The warm-up takes ~5 minutes and significantly improves first-session performance
- Auto Graphics Quality Setting: improved the auto spec
detection to select a graphics profile that better fits your system. The previous version was over-allocating high settings on mid-range hardware
How much did the patch help?
Based on community reports from Reddit, ResetEra, and the official Discord:
- ~60% of players report noticeably improved performance
- ~25% of players report marginal improvement (10-20%
better frame times, but still some stutter)
- ~15% of players report no change (mostly high-end systems
that weren't affected by the original issues)
The Steam review score has started to improve — from 46% positive on launch day to ~58% positive as of Aug 12. Still in "Mixed" territory but trending up.
What's still broken
The patch addresses the performance issues, but there are still two outstanding concerns:
1. Long matchmaking times
The PC version's launch issues have led to PC players being matched with PS5 players (crossplay is required due to the smaller PC population). But the matchmaking times are still 3-5 minutes per match, which is significantly longer than the 30-60 seconds for typical fighting games.
Pro fighting game commentator Sajam tweeted on Aug 11: "Biggest problem now IMO is matchmaking times. The wait is super long, even though connections are better."
Arc System Works is reportedly working on a region-lock fix for PC players, which should help matchmaking times by reducing the pool of eligible players per match.
2. The PSN account requirement
The mandatory PSN account link for PC players remains. This was the primary cause of the original review-bombing, and the patch doesn't address it.
Arc System Works has said the PSN requirement is a Sony mandate, not a developer choice. The only way to remove it is for Sony to change the policy, which is unlikely in the short term.
What the patch means for the meta
Beyond the performance fixes, the patch has shifted the fighting game community's perception of Marvel Tokon's PC version. The game is now playable on most systems, and the competitive scene is starting to take it seriously.
- ComboFiend and other top FGC players are now
recommending the PC version (instead of "play on PS5")
- The EVO 2026 lineup (Sept 12-14) will include Marvel
Tokon, with both PC and PS5 brackets
- The Crossplay lobbies are now more stable, making
PC-vs-PS5 matches more viable
What to expect next
Arc System Works has signaled that more patches are coming:
- Late August (TBD): another balance patch, expected to
address any tier-list shifts caused by the August 10 patch
- September: crossplay improvements, possible
region-lock option
- October: post-EVO balance patch based on tournament
results
Should you buy Marvel Tokon on PC now?
The honest answer:
- Yes, if you have a mid-range to high-end PC (RTX 3060+)
and can deal with the PSN requirement. The performance is now solid
- Wait 1-2 weeks, if you have a lower-end PC. The
matchmaking times are still long, and another patch is expected in late August
- No, if you have a PS5. The PS5 version is still the
best version of the game
FAQ
Did the Marvel Tokon Aug 10 patch fix the PC issues?
Mostly. ~60% of players report significant improvement, ~25% report marginal improvement, ~15% report no change. The Steam review score is improving but still in "Mixed" territory.
What about the PSN account requirement?
The Aug 10 patch doesn't address the PSN requirement. The requirement is a Sony mandate, not a developer choice. PC players still need a PSN account to play.
Are the matchmaking times fixed?
No — matchmaking times are still 3-5 minutes per match. The patch addresses performance, not matchmaking. A region-lock fix is expected in September.
When is the next Marvel Tokon PC patch?
Late August 2026 (TBD). Expected to be a balance patch with some additional performance improvements.
Is Marvel Tokon worth buying on PC now?
If you have a mid-range to high-end PC (RTX 3060+): yes, the performance is solid. If you have a lower-end PC: wait for the late August patch. If you have a PS5: still the best version of the game.
Will the Steam review score recover?
Likely. The current "Mixed" rating is expected to climb back to "Mostly Positive" within 2-3 weeks if the patch stability holds. The next major content drop (the Crossplay improvements) should help further.
